PPS and Pinging

This isn't an urgent matter: I tried to read up on this and still just don't get it.

This was something that came up in a friend's blog who was getting frustrated w/ someone else's blog who kept pinging his PPS (?).

Ok, well...something in the line of that (see? I told you I don't get it).

What's the deal? And why is this a source of frustration for my friend?

Also, how much of an explanation do you need? Do you want an explanation of pinging or is that old news to you?

I dunno what a PPS is, but a lot of the time when someone rapidly pings some device on a network, it slows down.

The only PPSs I'm familiar with have to do with a WW2-era Russian Submachine gun and Purchasing Power Standard. <.< >.>

lol... Pinging sub machineguns? WWII? So the Russians have been farther ahead of us technologically than we though...

Hmm.. I suppose it could be a quote out of ignorance. It could simply be that your friend has a robot that's crawling his site and "spamming" it. In that context, I would guess it might clog up his allowed "Posts Per Second" buffer, which could keep regular people from posting.


But that's a wildly uneducated guess.

Hmm....I wonder whether this attachment would help.

At this point, I think that pings are somewhat equivalent to counter counts/website hits. Maybe my friend is annoyed to see ppl trying too hard to make their blog seem popular or this activity slows down the blog server as a whole?

I don't see how PPS can be some form of service though.

P.S: If you bother to check out the actual blog itself, I won't guarantee that it's devoid of anything offensive.

The screenshot helped a lot. It seems PPS is a Malaysian Blog Portal/Aggregator called Project Petaling Street.

Since it runs on MovableType, pinging is basically a trackback from a member's blog. When a site updates that PPS is tracking, it'll notify the server and update the site. From what I hear, MovableType is written in Perl and generates static pages whenever it's updated. I also hear that MT is coded poorly and isn't really efficient, but that's all hearsay from Wordpress users.

Good griefy.....I almost laughed out loud. MSP, I think Project Petaling Street sounds more accurate in this case although Pandan Public School cracked me up as well. XD All this while, I thought PPS was some universal cyber term.

I eh....need to go figure out what MovableType means since I've never used WordPress before. Thanks for the input so far, it's been really interesting especially with Petaling Street. *chuckles*
