I wanted to try and stay away from online petitions, since I've seen flaming and such going on in them, but I can't really think of any other realistic way to get this to a wide group of people who would be willing to sign. So there it is. ^^ If anyone could, please spread this to Anime Angels and any other forum where people would be willing to sign.

My guess is that it might have to do with the fanservice in some anime. I mean some titles really overdo it: Blue Seed, Cowboy Bebop, ROD OVA... :shake:

I would sign this petition in a New York minute. The way FYE organizes its anime frustrates me so much that I hardly ever shop there any more.

The one near me has consistently kept the hentai on the same shelf as the regular anime, sometimes with the non-animated porn as well. For awhile, the hentai and porn were on the end of the shelf like in Bobtheduck's store. Then, they sorted the hentai in alphabetically like it wasn't any different at all! When I dropped in last week, they still had the anime and the hentai mixed together, but the hentai had black covers like Kae was talking about. That was a little better, but in a way it was even worse because I could see immediately how much hentai was on the shelf. And boy was there a lot! At a glance it looked like at least 20% of the shelf was black. With that system, I may not have to look at porn if I don't want to but I can't stop being looked at with the people that are looking at porn.

There's a dedicated anime store in the area, but it's not much better. The hentai is just kind of around and even the less racy stuff slopes in that direction. The windows are all covered, there are bars on the door, and you can't even go in unsupervised if you're under 18. It's totally pervert treehouse.

Best Buy is generally acceptable and has a good selection, but I agree that those other stores frustrate me, even if I don't go to them as much. Unfortunately, this compounds the problem as it is market forces that made these stores the way they are, and market forces will continue to push them in this direction as people like me that are offended by these practices leave and the stores focus more on the people that have no problem with them. This is why I think a petition is an especially good idea because it would allow us to coalesce as a market force to counteract the ones already in motion.

EDIT: I just found the petition link. Looks good. There is a typo in the second paragraph - the word "is" is missing between "Anime" and "a."

I also request that the petition link be edited into a prominent position in the first post of this thread, and that this thread be stickied.

EDIT: Wait, no. How about a new thread for the petition?

I too noticed that the hentai had black dividers in front of them on my last visit. :shake: Too much....way too much....another store I had gone too had the acceptable anime sandwiched in between live action erotica and hentai. :mutter: Neither end of the alphabet was safe.

I'll contact a mod about starting a new thread - maybe in the General section, where it could get more traffic. =3 And thank-you for pointing out the typo to me. ^^; I proofread the thing, but I guess I didn't catch it all.

Fry's, at least in San Diego, has a similar problem. Although they don't mix the hentai/etchi with the regular series, and they do use dividers, they're right there at the beginning of the regular anime aisle and it's very embarrassing as a result to be looking for a series starting with the letter 'A'. (Azumanga Daioo, Aura Battler, ...)

I'll sign your petition as well if you'll add Fry's to the list. (I don't know what FYE is ... is it this? http://www.fye.com/ )

Yes, that's the store in question. I'll be sure to add Fry's to the petition. (I might not be able to edit in their name, but I will certainly send them a copy as well if I can't)

Fry's where I live, keeps the hentai seperate from the mainstream anime (though in the same area) and puts the live action porn on a different set of shelves by the Horror films. They also have these big signs "YOU MUST BE 18 OR OLDER TO BROWSE OR PURCHASE." Sometimes they put softcore titles or excessive fanservice titles (Sprite, Sakura Diaries, Steel Angel Kurumi). Other times I've found Hentai mixed in with the mainstream titles. I think it's a matter of not knowing which is which in this case. Yes their Urotsukidoji is next to Azumanga Daioh, but the way the shelves are done, it's pretty obvious that there's a line of demarcation. It's not the best solution given that anime fans are getting younger, but it's better than FYE where you can find the hentai anime right next to the Miyazaki stuff.

I imagine that varies some from store to store. Now that I think about it, the Fry's off Lawrence Parkway in the Bay Area has them well-separated, but I think the Fry's in Anaheim off Kramer/Glassel has it set up like San Diego's.
