Manga reccomendations and questions about certain manga and one manhwa

Postby wiggins » Wed May 19, 2004 11:53 am

Hey guys,
Can I get some manga reccomendations from you guys? I like Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Naruto, Candidate for goddess, Azumanga Daioh, and Angelic Layer. Also, can someone give me a good Christian review of the Flame of Recca manga, and the manhwa, Now? Speaking of manga and manhwa, could someone also tell me the difference between manga and manhwa? Thanks!
God bless you,
Jon

Which is better? That probably depends on your taste.

Well, you might want to check into Juvenile Orion. It's interesting-- and confusing, but it's similar to some of the things you read now.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Both types have their advantages and I like both. For example, the awesome Ragnarok series is a Manwha. Yall know I like manga, so they both rock...

Confusing? In what sense? Could you tellme what I need to know about? Give it a good Christian review? Is it anti-God, anti-Christ, or anti-Christian in any way? Anything I should know about? Anything I should be wary about?

Okay. . . here we go.

Juvenile Orion:

Juvenile Orion's confusing because the plot's sorta complicated, and there are alot of ? marks in the plot. One instance in particular, we only see clips of the incident and we don't understand everything that's happened.
What do you need to know about Juvenile Orion:
Um, it's the story of a girl names Mana. She returns after her parents death to her home town where she hopes to meet a boy she knew as a child. She meets him, but he's changed.
In short, this is the story of a bunch of guys who are given these powers (they sprout wings) to do-- soemthing. I'm not exactly sure what the purpose of the super powers are.
Can I give it a good christian review: Okay, well, let me explain. When I recommended it, I had only read the first volume (It was the only one available at the time). The first one was really very clean. A little blood and some supposed possible homosexual undertones that were lost on me. Overall, I really didn't object to it at all (it was rated 13+) I finally got y hands on the second volume and it's rated 16+. I read through it to see what for. (Violence doesn't bother me, so I was curious.) Well, there was more violence which I believe was part of the hiked rating (One guy gets run through with a sword and we see this through several frames.) The other thing I noticed which I think was also responsible for the rating change was one or two frames where we see Mana and she's not wearing anything. There was nothing explicite. The first instance it was that totally vague outline-y deal where her arms are across her chest. The purpose is to show that she feels vulnerable and that one didn't really bother me. The second was of Mana and she's curled up like a cat with her arms wrapped around her, but she's more detailed. Again, nothing explicite, but still there. That bothered me some what. Also, there were more of what I think alot of people were picking up as homosecual untones. I personally am not sure if it's homosexuality. The relationship in question is between one character who's 16 and a character who I believe is 26. We know that the 16 year old is in love with Mana and the 26 year old knows this as well. The 26 year old sorta adopted the 16 year old when he was very young and I think it's just a VERY stong parentish-bond, but there were times when I wondered. . .

As far as anti-christian or what have you-- there are no "I hate God," or "There is no God" characters in this story, nor are there any Bible toteing evangelist preaching salvation.

So I'm not sure if I can recommend Juvenile Orion any more. Let me look over your post and I'll give you a review. Hang on.

Okay, here we go. Read Fruits basket.

If you like Azumanga Daoih, you like comedy. It's really funny and it's a great story.

Synopsis: Fruits Basket is centered around Tohru. Through various curcuimstances, Tohru is forced to live out of a tent in the woods. After a land slide in which her house is destroyed, she is invited to live with the mysterious Sohma family. Soon, Tohru comes to understand that there's something very different about the Sohma's. Very different. :)

As far as objectionable content:

To begin, it's rated Teen, which gives you a pretty good idea about the levels of the following things I'll mention.

A) There are transformation sequences which characters end up with no clothes on. As I've mentioned before, nothing is shown. There's always a cloud or a something covering them. (If you're confused, just think back to your Bible school days. You remember those movies about creation when God was talking with Adam and Eve. You know how a giraffe would always bend down right in time to cover their indecency. The same rule works with Fruits Basket)

B) There is a moderate amount of cussing. (It's really just one character) It's all s***, and D*** if I remember properly.

C) There are characters in the future might be homosexual. I don't really think they are, but that's for you to judge. I thought I picked up on one, but my sister didn't.

D) The Chinese Zodiac is a primary element of this manga. It's not use to predict futures of anything, but the idea it's self is an element in the plot.

Hmmm. . . that's all I can think of. There really are some great lessons one can learn fruits basket, and I personally believe that Tohru (main character) is quite possibly one of the most self-less characters in any manga I've read thus far. (Yay Tohru!!!)

If Fruits Baskets isn't grabbing your attention, you should check out DNAngels.

It's the story of young Daisuike(sp?). On his fourteenth birthday, Daisuike discovers that he transforms into a notorious theif named Dark when ever he looks at the girl he has a crush on. Daisuike strikes out on a quest to rid himself of this plague, and he steals stuff, gets into uber amounts of trouble, and tells a down-right good story in the mean time. I know, that was a lowsy synopsis, but my brain is already cramping up and I still have to do a content thingy.

Okay, content:

A) I don't remember if there was any language. For that reason, I'm gonna assume it did. It was minor if it was there at all, becuase I would have remembered anything extreme.

B) There was one point when Daisuike accidentally walks in on the girl's locker room (their locker room was broken so they were changing in the class room. He went back for a book he left, and viola! So, he's not a pervert  .) All the girls are atleast in their undergarments. There no more than a page of them staring at him in total disguist.

At another point, DArk is trying to escape and he stumble in on either Risa or Riku (Don't you dare expect me to tell them apart. They're twins for goodness sake!!!) She starts to scream, of course. And he kiss her to shut her up. This bothered me zero, but I'd hate for your to be surprised.

C) Dark is called something along the lines of a "fallen angel." This is really just a title, and, from what I understand, It doesn't have anything to do with acutal demonic activity.

D) Lastly, there's one character who is only introduced in the first volume who is beind taught to summon these creature which are suppose to aid her in combatting-- spirits of some sort. They could have been demons, but I don't think that was the word used.

There aren't any anti-christian messages in either Fruits Basket or DNAngels.

I believe that's all. Anyone add anything if they think I've over looked it. I hope this helped, Wiggins. Sorry for the delay.

Hmmm. . . I'm not gonna say I don't recommend it anymore. Before I could make a recommendation of Juvenile Orion, I'd have to know exact what does and doesn't bother you in manga. When I first I recommeded it to you, I hadn't seen any nudity. Now I know there is some minor nudity, even if it is for artistic purposes (to show a feeling of innocents and insecurity). Also, there are some possible homosexula relationships and more violence in the later volumes than in that of the first volume. So if you don't think those things would violate your conscience, then the story and art are great and I would still recommend it.

It's definitely not for the kiddies or people who are really worried about the stuff I mentioned.

Okay... I think I'll hold it off until i can get into a comic store to preview it before I buy online. I'll probably go with Now!. It looks pretty good, and I am hearing some good stuff about it from Mangabits and the animesuki forums.

O can anyone tell me about the Megaman NT Warrior manga? Thanks!

God bless you,
Jon
