I have heard its name. I know nothing about it. If you want to know for absolutely sure what it is before you get it then read the reviews on This, this, and this site. That's what I always do. There are probably other sites that are better but I haven't seen em yet. Anyhow make sure before you buy. I have wasted most of my money on terrible games that look absolutely awesome at first glance.

I almost got into it back in high school. My one word of warning to you is Warhammer 40K is a rather expensive hobby both monetarily and time wise. This is ultimately what stopped me from buying any figurines and really getting into it...though maybe one day I'll buy one of the computer games. But besides that, it is pretty awesome and is the holder of one of the largest TV Tropes pages...

If you're referring to the tabletop game, the sites Robin linked won't do any good at all.

I started building a Tau army for it but realized rather rapidly that my time and money were better spent other ways. I'd like to finish the models I have though, and seeing the massive armies my friends have is usually really cool, especially when they do mods and custom painting.

I hear that the video games for it are pretty good though, but playing games like this in person tends to be a lot more fun.

If you do decide to get into it, check out Forgeworld as well as the Games workshop site, there's really cool stuff on it.

Yes, the money is a consideration, and I'm a broke college student. However, I've fouind ways of doing things on a budget, so that's my thoughts.

Unfortunately those two companies are the ONLY distributors for the game, so unless someone sells you their models, you'll be stuck at the 25 dollars/medium unit price.

That's true, but I meant the terrain and game boards and such. I can make all of that stuff on a budget. The units themselves are rather expensive.

That's true... all you need is big table really, and some foam if you want to get fancy.

Wait, it's a tabletop RPG? Like I said I've heard the name and not much else.

Tabletop miniatures based war game.

Theres normal Warhammer, which is fantasy, then Warhammer 40,000, more commonly referred to by players as just 40K. Both use models, most of which are on the rather expensive side. The good side of the system is that you can, so long as you're within the rules and have the money, build whatever sort of army you want to wish. The other cool thing is that you can paint up your army(s) as you wish, though the downside of that is that you have to paint EVERY SINGLE unit. (A cadre of tau fire warriors is about 15 seperate models and the recommended size for an army means you'd have at least two of those, several tanks, several mech units, and myriad other specialist units.) Extremely time consuming.
