Safari Vulnerability - Upgrade if you use it!

Postby Mithrandir » Mon Nov 24, 2008 2:51 pm

Hey Guys,

For those of you who use Safari release before 3.2, you may want to upgrade. There's a remote exploit to be fixed.

More information here:

Would you say Safari has the same speed as Opera? Does it have an auto-spellchecker? I would download it, but I already have FireFox, Opera, and IE (which I wish I could get rid of -_-). Will it slow things down if I get it?

What if I can't due to OS restrictions? (Laptop running only OS 10.3.9) Use firefox only?

Also, I got an error from the link you posted saying the info can't be found.

Same with me. I got this message.

"ERROR, "null" is not valid. The CVE either does not exist or is not in the format of CVE-XXX-XXXX."

Or, is that supposed to be there >_>?

If you are seeing that error, your computer has been taken over by the virus already. You should burn it immediately. And then there will be cake.

Nah, I'm just kidding. If you can't upgrade to the latest Safari, I'd say stick with Firefox, yes. If you haven't considered upgrading your OS, you might want to. I believe there are some known exploits for 10.3 that are circulating. I have seen 10.5 run just fine on a G4 with about a gig of RAM, so it might be an option (unless you need to run classic, which will no longer run under 10.5).

Also, I've updated the link to work. Here's something fun: the link I just edited works, but when you click it, it will take you to the link I originally posted - which doesn't work. I don't really know why. :D

Main issue is that I actually can't upgrade now... most likely. The optical drive in the laptop is blown too. Would I be able to run off a firewire CD drive if I became so inclined to upgrade?

I almost had a heart attack when I read that first part XD Then I remembered that I don't use Safari, but I saw the same message for the Opera link XD;

Quite likely. Firewire boot is supported for most configurations. Just pop the CD/DVD in and see if it gives you the opportunity to install from it. If not, you may still be able to use System Preferences -> Startup Disk to boot from it.

If I had to wager, I'd say Windows Safari is likely vulnerable too, yes. I haven't researched that, though.
