Possibly getting a new computer.

Hi,
You might have heard about my computer problems in the prayer forum before.
Well after taking it to my Uncle, a computer repair guy, and the Geek Squad my computer still has the same (and more than before) problems.
So I'm thinking that maybe we'll have to get a new computer.
Anyway, I'm wondering what you guys would recommend to someone who had a Custom built computer that ran with Windows XP Home Edition, had 111 GB of disk space on the Local C drive, and a few other things that I can't think of right now.

I know you can get a decent Inspiron laptop from Dell. 2 gigs of ram, 160 gig hard drive... Though I think it comes with Vista.

Laptops are definitely cushy. Especialy if you have any college plans. My MacBook has revolutionized class all-together.

ajv, i build custom computers for people (and recently myself quad core 2.4 is over kill!!!!) and usually the first question i ask them is what do they intend on doing with the computer.

so... What do you intend on doing with your computer?

Gaming? school work/internet browsing? Video Editing?

If gaming, then what games do you plan/want to play? Depend on what games you wish to play, you can plan the hardware you would need around that to get more bang for your buck. For example if all you want to do is play CS:Source and World of Warcraft, you can get a pretty decent video card and 2gb of RAM that will be cheap and youll be able to run those games no problem. But if you intend on playing Crysis( i did and omgomgomgomg) , you need ATLEAST an 8800gt 512 (i got mine for $220) to make the game look decent and run smoothly.

If you want it for school and internet (and play music), you can build something that will be really cheap and run well enough to do all that. <$500 i would imagine.

If you want to edit video what you really would need is a powerful CPU, lots of ram and lots of storage space (depending on what you plan to edit ofcourse).

Then theres the question of if you want to be portable. if your going for a lappy, go Dell or Toshiba (Satellites are incredibly good machines for the price) And there are to many choices, from there on, though my recommendations are the XPS lappy from Dell, and the Toshiba Satellites. Both are great laptops for the price.

After that, there budget your on, and you just tailor around that. I can help you if you want, just hit me up on AIM.

Saj has great advice for you. If you want a computer that will do "everything" you'll end up making one that's overkill for somethings and not adequate for others.

From my experience, I've found it's cheaper to built a simple PC and use platforms (PS2, PS3, etc) for gaming. If there are specific games you want to play, add up the costs and decide if it's worth it.

This is all speculation, though, until we know exactly what you plan on doing with it, though.

Yea, the only reason why i built such a big computer was because i love RTS's and FPS's, but i cant stand them on consoles, im a mouse and keyboard person when it comes down to it. So i ended up building a (in the end after this last major upgrade) 1300 computer + my Wii and my xbox 360. Eventually ill grace myself with a PS3, when im done with all the mission trips this year.
