Chapter one
the still dream
I panted heavily as I ran down the dark street. Rain poured down around me. The chilly air surrounded me. The tan and gray buildings on my left and right laughed at me silently. My life was slipping away slowly and when I tried to stop running I could not. It was like something was controlling me.
Suddenly My eyes shot open and I was on a table in the emergency room. doctors surrounded me yelling at each other and snatching and tools. the heart monitor went flat. The doctor took out a needle and shoved into my heart. I screamed. “NO! STOP! I HATE NEEDLES!” but no one heard me because I had died a few moments ago.
I shot up out of my bed realizing it was all a dream. My head was pounding. Sweat ran down my face. I looked around. my small room was all in oder. the dresser to the right. the desk to the left, and the small window across from my bed. The door at the foot of my bed. I calmed down realizing it was just a nightmare. I rolled over to go to sleep again when a large blue light shot on. The light shined brightly through my window. I rolled over and put my feet on the soft cold carpet. I walked out of my room, doen the hall, and outside onto my deck. A small car was parked by my window. Fog sorrounded it making the light look gloomy and poisoned. I walked up to the car my feet making a crunchy sound in the gravel. Although the rocks where sharp, I felt no pain. Slowly a bright red light came from inside the car and I was at a funeral. When my mom had died.
I was confused. what happened? My mom rose from her coffin. a gloomy look of death on her cold face. I stared wide eyed at her. No this isn't real! I thought.
slowly words begun to form on her blue lips.
“Hi...ro...koooo.” she called in a horrifying voice. “Hiro..ko...” she speed up a bit almost sounding mad.
“HIROKO WAKE UP!” the shouting noise came into my ears and I shot up. I saw infront of me my high school teacher a ruler in her hand.
“This must be the real world!” I thought.
“Hiroko-Kun...you fell asleep again.” My best friend, Kozomi, said her soft voice soothing to my poor aching ears. “Yeah man, you totally dozed off.” my other friend said trying impersonate a American.
“hayagata-San...to the office!” She said pointing to the door.
“Hai, Sensai.” and walked out of the crowed class room. I walked down the hall and passed the office.
“They wont find out.” I said smirking to myself. I walked down slowly threw the hall and out onto the school yard. I sat down on the bench to the side sighing.
What where thoughs dreams I was having...I've never had dreams like that.
I thought. I rested my chin lightly on my hand. Maby I have some kind of brain cancer...No thats not it...besides the only thing that could cause that is...well..I donno...ARGG! What is wrong with me!?
I sighed once more. the cold wind blew threw my short black hair. the bare trees swayed to the soothing rhythm of the wind. the field just beyond our school danced in the sunlight. a family of ducks swam in the small lake. a chirp of a cricket rang threw the property. small songbirds sang a lovely soothing tune that could but even the most savage man too sleep.
About a hour later Kozomi and Gaku showed up. They where walking side by side chatting lively about homework and how unfair the teachers where compared to the the teachers in America. I guess I felt left out since Gaku and Kozomi are both Americans and I'm only half American and have never been there. My mother had been there...But she died before she could take me. My dad swore up and down that he would always stay in japan no matter what unless mother insisted on going. But mothers dead now...So I'm stuck in Japan.
“Hey guys.” I said standing from the bench as they passed by me.
“Hey, Hiroko-Kun. You got your lunch? We're going to the lake for lunch to day right?” Kozomi pointed to the small lake near the school.
I nodded and pointed to a small paper bag I held in my hand.
“My Chichi-San made lunch for me today. And yeah as far as I know.”
The three of us made our way down to the field. at lunch most of the students would come down here to eat. We where one of the many.
We sat down at our usual spot by the lake shore. I took out my lunch. it was a small ham sandwich. Mom used to make them all the time. So Father made them for me to remember her. Kozomi and Gaku pulled put there lunches and we all started eating merrily.
“You guys I had a really weird dream in class today...” I said in almost a wisper. a cold depressed look crawled upon my face. my gray eyes locked onto the horizon.
“What where they about?” Gaku said, carelessly stuffing a glob of rice into his mouth.
“Well, first I was running and running along the streets of Tokyo. I couldn't stop and I was slowly dieing as I ran but I couldn't stop. It...It was like something was controlling me. Then all of a suddenly I was on a table in the emergency room. My moanter whent flat and I died but I was still awake. a doctor gabbed a needle into my arm. I screamed but no one heard me. I woke up and I was in my bed room. A large blue light was shining threw my window. So in curiosity I went outside to see what it was. It was car that was parked by my window. but the fog was so thick I could only see a outline. The a bright red light flashed from inside the car and I was standing at my mothers funeral. She rose up from her coffin and started to call my name...slowly and Eire at first then faster and faster. Thats when I woke up to see Sensai in front of me.
“Wow..thats really creepy..” Kozomis voice was bare of emotion but full of deep thought.
“How did your mom die?” Gaku said wiping food from his face with his hand.
“Yeah, Hiroko-Kun, tell us about your mother...”
“ Well She was very young when she died. she died of breast cancer. she was born and raised in America, and she was also a Christian. But she died when I was three so I never got saved or anything...neither did my father. My mother was a sweet woman and always made me ham sandwiches so I could see what the most common American lunch was. thats all I remember really. she was a beautiful woman. Kind, Loving, and caring. To me it seemed like she knew everything. So what do you guys think about the dream?”
“I think....” Kozomi paused as she took a small bite of her sushi. “I think Gods trying to tell you something.”
“Oh come Kozomi-Chan, you know I don't beleave in your silly God.” I said pulling out a cigar from my lunch pack. I took out a match and light it carefully.
“Hiroko-San...No smoking on school grounds.” Gaku pointed to the cigar and smirked. “I got busted last time I did.”
“We're not on school grounds.” I said smirking back.
“Come on you guys stop getting side tracked!” Kozomi said rapping up the left overs from her lunch.
“Well, okay. Like I said. I don't believe in your God, Kozomi-Chan. I'm not a Christian.”
“I'm no Japanese fool!” Gaku sang as her fell backwards into the tall grass.
I laughed at his made up song. He sung it whenever I refused something.
I fell back into the grass too. Enjoying the warm sun and the soft ground. I wished this moment would never end. it was heavenly. If I died I right here and now I would be a happy man. But the moment soon ended. Thanks to gym class. The three of us rushed to out to the school yard. the teacher, Yozmo-Sensai, admittedly made the whole class run laps.
