Choosing Life—Chapter 1
Freedom.
That word alone was enough to lift her spirits. She breathed it again, feeling as spirited as a newborn colt. Having just finished repositioning the leather sofa in the foyer of her two-bedroom apartment, Jenna Pearson straightened herself and brushed her long dark hair away from her face, letting out a sigh of contentment. If any person were to ask her to describe her feelings at that moment, Jenna would barely hesitate before giving her answer. Casually she would compare herself to a slave, who, after years of undergoing seemly endless hardship, had finally received a document of emancipation, declaring him now a free man.
Exhausted, Jenna plopped down onto the sofa and let her eyes linger on the decorations she and her roommate Leanne Johnson had picked out from some of the local discount stores. Posters that depicted various forms of wildlife, colorful and whimsical lamps, as well as various wall ornaments gave an originally bare living space a bright and welcoming environment. Satisfied with her progress so far, Jenna let out another sigh and let her thoughts wander towards other matters. Was it really only two weeks ago that Clint helped me find a place to live in Upland? Did nearly five years really pass since the two of us moved out here to California?
The ring of the telephone brought Jenna back to the present. Seconds later it sounded again. “Hang on. I’m coming,â€
