"Anime is great!" I say that alot, and most of my family agree. I got two of my little brothers into it. They're going completely insane over GunParade March and the different .hack// series right now. My youngest brother also loves Knights of the Zodiac. Hmmm, maybe I'd better stop him on that one . My mom loves the studio Ghibli stuff. She even got Princess Mononoke from the library and let us quit school for a while just to watch it!? Generally my dad just jokes around by calling it 'animated porn'. He knows I don't watch that stuff though... I recently got him watching Wolf's Rain. He seems to like it...

Other than that, I do have 1 brother who hates it with a passion. If it's not live action, or (better yet) a war flick, he thinks it's stupid. He did like Metropolis though...

Its funny really, my parents aren't really strict about what I watch. They wont let me watch porn or hentai (why would I want to?) and me and my dad have arguments about me watching films sometimes(he was really shocked when he found out what Evil Dead was like when I said I'd seen it). But generally if he walked in on one of those annoying fanservice moments (like on Vamp Hunter D where shes in the shower) he'd probably just say something REALLY embarrasing like 'Nicholas, close your eyes this second' (I REALLY hate it when he does that).

My mom and dad don't really care about anime for the most part, as long as it is not blatantly sexual or loaded with obscenity. My siblings are ambivalent towards it for the most part. Where I would go my older sister would say "hmm." The same goes for my youngest. My little brother and younger sister, ConvoyButterfly, are more on the otaku side of the equation.

My parents thinks it's cool...they watch the music vids i make of it and th epcitures. My parents have seen Princess Mononokee. My dad however has seen some of Rurouni kenshin, Samurai X: Trust and Betryal, Cowboy Bebop, and Hellsing. He likes them.

My sister likes Pokemon and Hamtaro (hey, it make be crappy anime but still anime).

Cool thing is, my parents ahve 100% trust in me when it comes to things I watch. For instacne,w hen I got my oUtlaw Star Box Set, it has a almost half-naked Melfina. My mom saw this and said "You know, I can watercolor over this." I siad thats ok. They know that it's ok cause I'm watchign this, same thing for Hellsing. They don't like the title but they know it's ok since I chose to watch it

Well my dad watched the 4th dvd of bebop and the fourth vhs of trigun. Just to preview them. He actually kinda liked em. But now i dont have him preview things i just look at a review site. And he trusts me

my parents are alot like that. Though if thier is a swear word and my mom is in the room, she will say "Did they jusy say the whatever word" and then she will laugh. My dad walked in when I was watching Cowboy Bebop and saw Faye and said somehting like "wow, she's pretty hot". My mom was right behind him and smacked him in the head

Yeah, my dad did like Excel Saga a lot, but he also seemed to enjoy Noir. My little sister doesn't really care what the story's about; as long as there's a cute anime boy in the show, she's satisfied.

my parents can tolerate it at some point. I let them watch serious themes like grave of the fireflies and GITS:SAC since they like the matrix flick so much (esp. my Dad) They would watch comedy/romance but would leave their seats halfway of the ep.^^;;;

Although I managed to convince my family to watch Miyazaki's Spirited Away, they are not very anime-oriented at all ("Aw, you're doin' that 'Tenchi Moyo!' anime business again!").

My dad likes it because to him it is so weird. Granted I've never watched anything with him, in my opinion, that is real involved. I remember one Saturday night before I went out my dad and me were watching CN, back when they had G Gundam on Saturday nights.

He thought it was so funny how the American gundam pilot's name was Chibodee Crockett. For days after that he walked around saying "Oh Chibodee!" because Chibodee's crew had said that during an action sequence in the show.

My dad likes some anime. I've gotten him to watch a few shows, he really enjoyed Rurouni Kenshin. He wants to watch .hack//Sign when I finally get DVD #6 of it. My younger brother couldn't care less about anime, my younger sister is an uber-casual watcher, and my mom..well..she's in the same boat as my brother. They don't have issues with anime or anything like that though...they're pretty cool about it. They know I'm not going to watch anything bad (dun dun dun dramatic reverb..). So..uh..that's my story.

My mom is the type that over-spiritualizes EVERYTHING!!! For example, she walked in on me when I was watching that one ep. of DBZ when Buu was fighting Vegito. The moment that she caught was the part when Buu tried to kill Vegito by turning himself into liquid and entering his body through his mouth. Her response was simply this: "How satanic...", and she walked away. She is also the type who judges a book (or in this case, an anime) by the title. She comments on titles like "Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness", and "Shaman King" (I don't even watch Shaman King, by the way); yet, she overlooks a made-for-tv movie that my sister was obsessed about called "Devil's Food", in which the main character sells her soul to the Devil to lose weight. She didn't even flinch when my sister started watching it almost religiously, yet almost tried to ban my viewing of anime just because of the titles.

Then there's my sister, who is basically my mom's support crowd. She agrees with most of whatever my mom says. So, she sees anime in the same light as my mom.

This is my story. I have no one in my family that likes anime, or is even open to sampling it to make a judgment based on what the anime is actually about.

Anime is one of those things that's rarely in the middle ground. Either you like it a lot, or you think it's nasty Asian cartoons. There are exceptions to this, but they're few and far between.

sometimes im embbarassed about talking about anime with my family. like im afrais when my mom goes shopping, she might bring home something that seems innnocent enough like tenchi muyo. i find it best not to make a big deal about the whole thing all togetther.

Wow maybe my mom isn't as bad as I thought. I'm lucky because I have a partner in crime, Destiny (my youngest sister- and that is her name for here but she never comes on anymore) so not only do I have someone to talk about anime with, but we take turns buying dvds.

The rest of my family though... well they have a hard time even saying "anime" right. At first my mom was all concerned about what we were watching but then I told her I would never watch an anime that I wouldn't let Destiny watch, so I think after that she either decided to trust me or gave up trying to keep up. My biggest problem is that she considers anime to be equal to cartoons so when she hears one of the characters swear she flips out. And she decided to watch a few episodes of Fruits Basket with us and was like "you two realize this isn't real and horoscopes are wrong, blah, blah, blah"

My Dad doesn't care as long as we don't watch too much at one time, I don't think I could ever get him to like it though.

My other sister likes to make fun of the big eyes, and the wild emotions but she will sometimes watch parts of fruits basket with us.

My parents don't care what I watch from a moral standpoint. I'm an adult. They also are retired and moved away from the house, but they wouldn't care, anyway, so long as I don't inturrpt them watching TV to watch what I want to watch.

Heck, I recall them letting me watch R rated movies when I was a little kid.


But, my family does think I'm weird. If I talk about anime, I get this viceral reaction, this really look on people's faces. I did get my mom to watch Princess Mononke with me, but that's it.

And, it's not like she can't get into animated things, either. She likes some Disney stuff... and probably everything Pixar/Disney. She adores Toy Story... Took Finding Nemo with her to her and my dad's new house because she liked it so much (I bothered her to give me the second disc in the 2 disc package, so, yay, I have it too, now!)... She loved "Shrek" (not a Pixar/Disney, but still a good movie). As for anime... she thinks it's weird and that I'm weird for liking it.


The younger folks in my family are *little* more understanding... I leant my nieces and nephew ( ages 12, 9, and 5, respectively), my tape of "Spirited Away" and have not seen it back for months. They refuse to let go of it! My 9 year old niece was watching it EVERY DAY after she came home from school... I don't know if she's still doing that, but heh... I made Miyazaki fans out of my sister's kids, at least for one movie!

However, I talk about other anime to my sister... was telling her about Hellsing, and she's all "The kids will like that." and I'm adamantly "NO! NO! NO! IT'S NOT FOR KIDS!!!! HELLSING IS NEVER TO BE SHOWN TO KIDS!" So... meh.... trying to *explain* anime to my family, and that it's not for kids, and that I'm not immature or weird for watching it... Oy.

I would like to get my sister to watch The Animatirx, though. I want to watch it WITH her, when her kids are at school... definitely watch it with her as to make sure she doesn't carelessly let her kids watch it thinking "it's a cartoon". I think she would like The Animatrix because she's a huge fan of the Matrix movies - or at least the first one.

I am not sure if I shall meet with any sucess on this ground. I'm pretty much labeled weird by my family, anyway, and not just for anime.

I forgot to mention. Both my mom and sister tend to walk in on my anime viewing during those stupid, annoying fan-service clips. It happens every time.

Maybe I should change my motto to that one phrase from Pirates of the Carribean: "My sympathies, friend. You've no manner of luck at all."

hmm... it's hard to explain the situation my family is in... basically the term "anime" doesn't really exist in my family (i sometimes, uncommon use the term myself) simply because we don't really find a difference. some cartoons are for kids. others for adults, some for teens. there are good ones and there are bad ones. whether they come from japan, usa, or korea, no body cares. i think the only ones who use the term frequently is my brother, and when i am talking to him, or to his friends. because they do see it as a different genre. "american cartoons" for them are less mature than "anime". so i have to adjust my language to speak to them, lol. ;D

dad: consider cartoons almost to be just as good as real life movies, because he would read european comic books when he was small (almost obssessively, as far as i know.) he passed this on to me. doesn't care if it comes from japan and whatnot~ slightly disturbed by nudity... when, two years ago we were looking for a better way for me to buy my comic books, he comes one night after having done some research on, casual says at the dinner table: "you know, J, what you whants has a lot of ladies with their breasts out." i hope you can imagine my embarassment~ XD

mom: she knows the term "anime" but she doesn't care either. she just knows i like to draw and read asian comic books. she sometimes sits down and watches it. used to nudity, sometimes more than i am. i was once watching the show "inuyasha", the main girl was having a bath and the two boys were waiting behind a rock for her to finish. then the little one (Shippou i think his name is spelt) says, "alright! i'm going in there with her, i'm sticky too, i don't understand why i can't take a bath with her." he then takes his clothes off and "dances" around naked on the screen (and he's a boy... so........ o__o;;) i blushed and looked away. i looked at my mom and she was unmoved, just eating her apple, continuing to watch. she mumbled something like "isn't nudity common in your shows? this is undetailed too....you should be used to it,...." XD

brother: he knows what "anime" is, however i don't think he watches it or reads comic books... in fact, i'm unsure of what he does!?

sisters: i read fruits basket to my sister, she really likes it, in fact she hyperventilates whenever i say i'm ordering the next volume or another one has come out, but other than that she does not care about cartoons. she just knows i like comic books. my youngest sister is too young to know or care~

everyone else: don't care. they are just cartoons. x-x

My bros used to like DBZ, pokemon, and medabots. Some of the younger ones like Shaman King. Generally though they think anime's dumb and although they don't mind me watching it, sometimes they tease me (But I'm oldest so who cares). My parent's don't care but they aren't the types that would watch it themselves.

*lol* Well, let's just say that in my family, I'm very much alone when it comes to anime. I think my little brothers are slowly converting...but mom and dad, yeah, it's a lost cause. ^^;; They dislike anime, and rather frown on me drawing it. They try to "support me in my pursiuts", but it's rather half-hearted. But their not too bad about it. They let me buy anime and manga, and try to have the 'different strokes for different folks' attitude. *lol*
But, (they've admitted to this) they have the mentality that since they don't like it, they don't want me to like it. Their first reaction is to say no to it, then find reasons to support their answer. I understand they are, after all, my parents, and do my very best to respect their decisoins, but it is awfully irksome sometimes....

My mom thinks all anime is bad and tells my sister to turn it off (Yu-Gi-Oh!, DBZ, DB, DB GT, Rurouni Kenshin, Digimon...). The only thing that my mom really is ok with is Pokémon, and that's because of my former obsession with it-- she knows I wouldn't watch anything terrible, so she allows others in my family to watch it.

My 9 year old sister will watch DB GT and DBZ and SD Gundam and a few others, but really, my mom doesn't like them. My parents haven't even really watched them. My mom saw fighting in some anime once, though, so I guess that one moment of fighting is enough to hate all anime in her way of thinking. *shrugs* Oh, well.

I like anime, but I can't really watch it because not everything on Adult Swim is appropriate for younger kids-- and the whole time zone thing with CN means that I'd be watching it when my little siblings are still up. I can't afford to buy DVDs of it, either. Most anime I watch, I watch at friends' houses.

My two teenage sisters hate anime. They think it's all dumb (all they've seen is Pokémon, and they never really did like it). They just automatically label everything else as stupid or bad. More the latter.

The same is true of my pre-teen sister.

It's the 9 year old who loves anime.

The little brother likes it, too, but he likes anything that I or my 9 year old sister likes. =) He espeically likes Pokémon, DBZ, and Yu-Gi-Oh! (because he sees our sister watch them).

My parents don't know much about it at all. They think it looks ugly and weird. So... they don't like it. I dont' like their choice of tv/movie viewing either, though, so whatever.

My dad doesn't really care... at least, I don't think he does. He thinks my drawing anime-style all the time is "squandering my own artistic development"... but I've improved in many aspects that can be applied to other forms of art. Maybe he wants me to draw realism?

My mom really supports me in anything I like doing, anime/manga included. She told me at the very beginning when I got into a/m that she wanted me to be careful about the occult/religious themes, but she trusts me to be able to tell wright from wrong. Sometimes she even goes out of her way to help me (like looking for anime movies at the rental place).

For my brother and sister, anime's a cartoon just like any other. I don't think they really care... althought my brother does like Dragonball Z. My friends don't like anime at all, but surprisingly they've become interested in manga (under my influence, of course! ^^)
