Too many Sakuras!

Postby rocklobster » Fri Jan 19, 2007 2:15 pm

Ever notice how many girls named Sakura there are in anime? There's quite a lot. Here's some titles I know that have a girl named Sakura in them:
 • Cardcaptors (duh)
 • Naruto
 • Betterman
 • Please Save My Earth
 • Blue Seed and Blue Seed Beyond
 • Sakura Wars (duh again)--haven't seen it, but I read a manga preview once

did I leave any out?

Tsubasa Chronicles, too; though I suppose that might include CCS's Sakura by default.

But you could put the shoe on the other foot, "THERE ARE TOO MANY EMILY'S."
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Well, when you think of sakura, you think of cherry blossoms, which are very pretty. So of course authors want to use this name to perhaps fit the image of their character.

I looked up "sakura", and it has two other meanings:

2. Decoy or fake buyer
3. Hired applauder

Feel free to read into that however you like.

That might be true or not.
As far as it goes I know of only one Kagome(Inuyasha)and two Kaedes(Inuyasha,
Betterman). There are probably also dozens of Yukis but the only one I can think of is my beloved Yuki Saiko from Silent Mobius, and need we count how many Mitsuki's(and variant spellings)there are?I mean there are two just in Dual!

There's a Tsubaki Sakura in "His and Her Circumstances". She matches the "Sakura" legacy--cute yet tomboyish. She also has one of my favorite lines in the series:

"I understand. From now on, you're Yukinon."

"I'm what?"

"You're our friend now, and a member of our group. Okay, Yukinon?"

I'm with Osaka here. I could just as easily say, "There are too many Jennifers in TV shows!" or "There are too many Johns!" Sakura is apparently a popular name in Japan; Jennifer is a popular name here. And even if you say okay, there are seven or eight characters listed here named Sakura, well, there's like what, over a thousand anime series? That's not even 1%.

So...yeah.

Wouldn't Sherry on Zatchbell be another Sakura in Japanese or is the fact that her name is spelled with an S instead of a C make a difference?

Actually I was thinking this over yesterday before going off and besides all those Sakuras there are at least:

3 Roys:
Robert 'Roy' Device from Silent Mobius
Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist
Roy Fokker from Robotech

2 Kaedes:
Inuyasha
Betterman

2 Namis:
Nami Yamigumo from Silent Mobius
Nami from One Piece

2 Megumis:
Megumi Shitow from RahXephon
Megumi from Rurouni Kenshin

of course there are probably more of each but these are the only ones I can think off off the bat.
btw:There are also several Alice/Arisus as well such as:
Alice from Serial Experiments Lain(Lain's friend)
Alice from Please Save My Earth!
Alice from Alice 19th...etc...

I don't know if the Roy in Robotech counts. Remember, those are Americanized names.

I have thought about this, too! I mean, dang, can't they get more creative than that? I have never heard the names of my Japanese good friends in anime (Jun and Fumika, in case someone knows of any characters with those names). But Sakura is everywhere! There is a Sakura in the W Juliet manga as well.

Interesting enough the Japanese seiyuu who did Sakura in Cardcaptor Sakura was herself named Sakura!

Actually part of the reason might be is that names are limited by law in real life. According to something I read in Anime Insider.

Or it could be just that Sakura's such a darn popular girl's name over there.

Well when I visited Japan (short trip) I don't remember meeting any Sakura's. I guess it's a popular name to use in movies/anime/manga but not real life? It could be kind of like our version of "John Smith" where practically no one has that name (unless they had cruel parents) but it's used a lot.

Add
Arima and Yukino's eventual daughter from Kare Kano to the list. That really annoyed me.
Jun---Tekken (video games count?)

Fumika---I'm sure I heard this name in some anime (or was it Fumiko?) but I can't remember which.

Interesting the only other time I have come across Kagome outside of Inuyasha was in Silent Mobius. The episode where Nami goes home is entitled:'Kagome,Kagome'because it's the title of the children's song that is featured in the episode.Though I can't think of any other character by the name.
