most thought-provoking anime

Postby rocklobster » Mon Oct 23, 2006 6:44 am

One thing I truly enjoy about anime is how thought provoking it can be. Some shows can really make you think. So what anime do you think is the most thought-provoking? Here's my list:
  • .hack//sign
  • Serial Experiments Lain
  • Full Metal Alchemist
  • Trigun
  • Wolf's Rain
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion

The most thought provoking out of all of them would be Paranoia Agent.

*Ghost In The Shell:Stand Alone Complex(the very nature of what makes us human)

Never heard of it and just looked it up, and surprised it's only a 1 ep, 23 min OVA :/ Guess it was jammed with tons of stuff in that little amount of time?

One that I think that should be on the list is, "Now And Then, Here And There."

It'd be Evangelion, seeing as that still to this day people talk about and analyze it like crazy. You can say Paranoia Agent if you want, but it never rose any question that fans obsess over for over ten years afterwards. It was a hit, but it doesn't have the staying power.

Scrapped Princess, Full Moon wo Sagashite, and Cowboy Bebop all come to mind. Parts of Trigun, but I was vaguely disappointed in it by the end. *runs from fans*

*takes deep breath*

According to Homer, the epitome of manhood is being unable to be beaten; to wit, when the world says "no way," the Man says "yes, way."

Plato's greatest question is in the Symposium: "Is love of something, or of nothing?"

The Bible says, "Greater love hath no man than this..."

Where do these three foundations of all modern thought agree?

<.<
>.>
^_^

When the world says, "No, way, Edward Elric, your love of your brother is of such to be as of nothing," he says, "Yes, way, my love is of something!" and proves it.

*lets breath out*

Look! I resisted going into a 3 hour rant! Aren't you all proud of me? ^_^

Elfen Lied. That anime really makes you think about what you really would consider human. Funny thing is though I was cheering for the diclonius for the whole time. Like when you see people such as Mayu's dad, you feel so disgusted and outraged by his actions you can't believe you even belong to the same species as this guy!

I would disagree. Have you seen all of Paranoia Agent, just wondering.

Oh and actually. I take back Paranoia Agent. The most thought provoking is Cat Soup. Nothing beats the surrealism of that show.

Tenshi no Tamago (Angel's Egg). A really awesome Mamoru Oshii movie with lots of neat imagery, and very very little dialog. There's a TON of meaning in everything in it. Yoshitaka Amano did the character designs.

After that? maybe.... Beyond the Clouds, the Promised Place.

um. After that.... maybe Omoide Poro Poro, the studio ghibli movie directed by Takahata.

I'm going to second .hack//SIGN and Elfen Lied.

I'm also going to throw in "Voices of a Distant Star" (Hoshi no Koe) as one of the most thought-provoking things out there.

I'm about 3/4s done with Haibane Renmei, and it has lots of potential. :thumb:

I see most of my favorites listed, except for Witch Hunter Robin. I'll also mention a series called Jigoku Shōjo, which I have not even seen, but the summary was enough to get me thinking and in light of my ensuing conclusions from that pondering, I think the series will be too much for me.

I think FLCL was sorta thought provoking... D: Well, like it confused the heck outta me, but I still like it. xD;;; .hack is pretty crazy too. @o@ Um... buh. I sorta want to say Alien 9, but I haven't watched it in forever, and that would only be based on my horrible memory of my thinking I thought it was confusing? xD;;; Maybe it wasn't actually... @o@

...buh. xD; Thought provoking as in like... it makes you rethink what you thought you already knew, or like... it was confusing? D: xD;;;

Just to clarify, I wasn't talking about discussing Eva, I just wanted to know what he thought made Paranoia Agent the most thought-provoking show, but I have no intent to go on discussing it anyway.
