I don't know if there's a US edit (such as the US version of Tenchi in which they drew a swimsuit over Ryoko in a certain onsen scene..) - BUT- Gash-Bell ep1 included a naked baby boy, full frontal with, shall we say, "more detail of the crown jewels than we ever wanted to see on TV."

More explicit than Miyazaki's tanuki critters, and we bailed on Gash-Bell that series at that moment.

There may be a US-edit vbersion which clipped it out, but JUST A warning if you are watching a Japan-produced Region 2 DVD or fansubs, You may be in for a revolting surprise.

Incidenallty in Japan the Tanuki statues outside izakayas and other "watering holes" are often similarly 'endowed.'

- G

the US version of Zatch Bell does have digitized underpants.

I was holding off from Gankutsuou because given the original request, the parents may not be comfy with say, vampire movies or demonic posession. In the original story, (Dumas, 1847) the count gets his 'power' by hanging out with another inmate who teaches him many, many things: languages, math, history, etc. From that we deduce that the Count, upon his whirlwind return of revenge, has the expertise to do things like rattle financial markets and in general play chess-master head games with people, so we can believe & enjoy that phase of the story.

But in Gankutsuou, although it is not explained, the change from Dantes to 'The Count' is represented as kind of a devil's bargain - the anime Count seems more 'possessed' by something ravaging a growing portion of his body as the story goes on. Anyways, this aspect of possession / demons may cross the line to some. Also there is one oedipal scene. (I forgot - did that one happen in the book?)

My wife & I also really enjoyed Negotiator Yugo. No exposure, although there are definitely some graphic scenes, plus some underwear (iirc) and a few shower silhouettes, (again, iirc. It's been 2 yrs.)

What do/would the original poster's parents think of Hack Sign? No magic, but rather fantasy characters in an MMORPG. If that's OK, then no only are there several seieres in the franchise (liminality, roots, dust, etc.) but you might also try Zegapain. (I havent started that one yet - does anyone have any news & comments?)

.hack//legend of the twilight does have some sex-related jokes in it. In one scene, the main character boy turns around and slams right into a well-endowed woman's chest.
My Neighbor Totoro was a great movie. And I'd second the thought on Kodocha. I'm loving that one. ^_^
Fruits Basket was great, but there was some language. And then there was the male character who owned a lingerie shop, and one of the characters is a writer of smutty novels. But those don't get overplayed or anything really.
Kenshin was great but it was a little bloody at times in the uncut DVD version.
Voltron is always another great pick, but it's very 80's, more a nostalgia thing than anything else. Voltron got me started in anime, but now I've come to appreciate unedited anime, and Voltron was edited quite a bit. But that was done a lot back in the 80s. Battle of the Planets is a good example of that. I'm interested, after all these years, in seeing GoLion - the original cartoon that Voltron was pieced together from.
That's about all I can think of now.

Wolf's Rain doesn't have any sexual content and the language is fair. But your parents probably wouldn't approve to the story.

Trigun is a good suggestion, but it does have some strong language. The series is very Christian-like, though...

But, yeah, Miyazaki's flims are the way to go. It's like anime Disney.

OOh, I forgot to mention Big O! :hits_self Probably one of the safest cartoons ever to air on Adult Swim.

Gankutsuou has sexual content in it. To sum it up, there's a boy who dresses as a girl and seduces Albert in order to kidnap him. He/She pops up throughout the series. The Count has sex with another man's wife, and a man working for the Count seduces a woman (who he later finds out is his mother >.<). I believe the same man also tries to rape his arranged marriage fiancee.

Soooo that's a big no... Admittedly it's a very good series and all these scenes are assumed (as in, we see the beginning and the rest is left to imagination). If you've read the book you'd be fine seeing the series.

No, Geirr, I don't remember that one scene in the book.

Well, that all depends on interpretation. Some Fruits Basket fans say Ayame is probably straight, just a real weirdo...I'm one of 'em. However, I will say that it's pretty ambiguous to whether he is or not. So if ambiguity bugs you, Ayame will bug you (I got no problem with him though).

Just a few quick corrections on Fruits basket:
-none of the characters are really gay, neither Haru nor Ayame, they both have women that they like.
-Ayame does NOT own a lingere shop, but a "fantasy costume shop" which your parents may object to. (Ayame in dress = bad) They sell nurse/french maid outfits.

Please, when trying to understand Fruits Basket, read the manga. It is better, in my opinion.

As for my suggestions, go for:
Tsubasa Chronicle
Angelic Layer
Black Cat (the anime, avoid the manga, it contains nudity)
Samuri 7(you might want to double check me on that)
Xenosaga the animation

Has anyone suggested Last Exile. There's not much action, but it's a great story and has very little violence. Read the review!

Most of the sports series like Whistle or the Prince of Tennis are clean.

Or you could always watch Piano, but that show is so boring in my opinion it's not worth the suffering.

: : deep breath : :

TSUBASA RESERVOIR CHRONICLE~!

Very clean, awesome series. It is worth noting that one character occasionally swears [that'd be Kurogane, the ninja], but it wasn't that often, as I recall. Nothing worse than what you'd hear walking through your average mall, I'll wager. : : sighs : : There's magic a-plenty, but it's nothing disturbing, just typical fantasy magic. No sexual content at all. None. Rejoice. There's fighting, but it's very sanitized [little to no blood/dismemberment] ~ besides, the main characters are a pair of adolescents [one a princess who doesn't fight at all], a goofy mage [who'd no slouch at fighting, but he's not violent at all], and a swordsman who is forbidden to kill. Check out the manga, since the anime's not quite for sale yet, IIRC. Do it. Do it nine times. It is wonderful. ^_^

All the toonami jetstream cartoons (except Naruto, maybe) are pretty safe.

Naruto isn't that bad...well ok maybe a little.

I think my Mom hates all anime no matter what it's about.

Fruits Basket mostly has small bad words like "d***" and "h*ll". Sometimes (few times) it has @$$ but never the f-word or "s***".
