Please don't get started on the closed issue (and by that I mean telling other people what to watch), but there is a lot cut out from the Japanese version to the American Version.
The story is quite different, personalities are different, music is different, names are different, some episodes were left out, the show is less freaked out by death, and of course, the more controversial aspects. There are homosexual characters: Zoicite, Kunzite, Haruka (aka Sailor Uranus), Michiru (aka sailor Neptune), And fisheye. It is never once explicit (no kissing, no serious talk about it, only a whole lot of hints and dodgy statements) There is also a character who is not Homosexual, but is very confusing and makes you think he is. Basically, Mamoru is the only who showed him kindness, so he has tunnel vision and only wants to comfort Mamoru as Mamoru comforted him.
Besides that, there is anatomically incorrect nudity (like a Barbie doll). I mean, Laws of physics don't take effect even, so
there's no "bounce" except perhaps in one scene where they were discussing who should play snow white in a play... Funny scene in Japanese, but funnier even when you see that DiC still slipped in a euphamistic joke instead of removing that scene alltogether.
so it is even less objectionable than Ranma in that manner.
There is death, murder (though Cloverway did NOT remove that scene, surprisingly), and self sacrifice (suicide to save someone else) that was all removed, mostly from the first season. Actually, it was only removed when it involved "good guys" but if it was villains, they left it in... Geez...
So, a fan of the original show (who's seen it in subtitles or knows Japanese) will often have a hard time talking with a dubbie fan. Melody, I must say... Tsukino Serena? That's half the Japanese name, half the DiC name... In Japan, her name was Tsukino Usagi (the "Last" names come first in Japanese) meaning Moon Rabbit... Oh, so THAT'S why her room is full of rabbit related items? Mercury is Mizuno Ami, meaning "Friend of the water" (I think friend in this case is french), Mars is Hino Rei meaning "The ghost of the fire", Jupiter's is "Kino Makoto" meaning "Sincerity of the tree", and Venus is Aino Minako meaning "Love's (something)" The little girl is "Small Lady" and her human name is ALSO Tsukino Usagi, but they call her "Chibi Usa" because she's a small usagi. Her sailor name is Chibi Moon. Pluto is "(?) Setsuna" and I have no clue what that means, and Saturn is "Tomoe Hotaru" Hotaru means firefly, which shines bright and fast, and then dies dark (that represents her... She is the most powerful of the team, but she will die if she uses her power. She'll "shine bright" and die soon)
In addition, DiC left out a very important attribute of the Silver Crystal, which is to use it will kill the user as well, but they also gain a dying wish. They left that part out because that would mean the end of season 1 would not be to the liking of many parents... The last two episodes of season 1, the best episodes in the entire series in my opinion (though my favorite series alltogether is stars ) were chopped into bits and shortened to 1 epidode... About half of each ep was removed, and very important facts (like, what made the plot) were changed to be less threatening.
So, yeah, I would suggest any moonie who hasn't seen the original find someone who has the uncut first season, and watch it over the course of a month or two.
Red Ninja? Is that a "monster of the week" character? My favorite motw would have to be... No, wait, I hated almost all of them... All the ones that interacted with Hotaru weren't cool themselves, but it was funny when they like get all "oh, sorry little girl" and she goes "la la" on them and fries them... The Satun song scenes are my favorite moments in S.
