Okay, first: I go to FanFiction.net simply because it's probably the largest, most comprehensive fanfiction site. That being said, I hate, Hate, HATE the majority of the fics there. If they're not yaoi (or some similar disgusting pairing), they're Myself Plopped Into The Story. If they're not Myself Plopped Into The Story, they're Original Character Mary Sue. If they're not Original Character Mary Sue, they're unfit for consumption by anyone who's read a book before. If they're not unfit for consumption by anyone who's read a book before, then they just might be worth your while. I myself go wading through the sections of my favorite fandoms, seeking out those few fics that aren't complete trash. In this way, I've discovered how much I hate the things I've already mentioned, and at the same time I've discovered several very gifted authors. Sifting through the myriad of fanfics requires skimming through the summaries and instantly ignoring any ones that say something like, "shonen-ai," "I suck at summaries," "Better than it sounds! Really!" "This is my first fanfic, so be nice!" "Alternate Universe," and so on and so forth. In such a way, and also keeping my settings so that only fics rated K-T are shown, I can manage...barely.
Anyway, if you're looking for a good FMA author, I would recommend Dailenna. She writes very well, and very close to canon. She mostly just writes Mustang-Hawkeye romance, but does it much better than anyone else I've seen. She mainly does one-shots, but she has a few longer ones as well. There's a reason I've read and reviewed just about all her stories
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

"There's a difference between maliciously offending somebody - on purpose - and somebody being offended by...truth. If you're offended by the
truth, that's your problem. I have no obligation to not offend you if I'm speaking the truth. The truth is
supposed to offend you; that's how you know you don't got it."
