Getting your family into anime

Postby Hitokiri » Sun Feb 08, 2004 6:31 pm

Are you fortunate to have your family hooked on anime??

My parents thinks it's cool...they watch the music vids i make of it and th epcitures. My parents have seen Princess Mononokee. My dad however has seen some of Rurouni kenshin, Samurai X: Trust and Betryal, Cowboy Bebop, and Hellsing. He likes them.

My sister likes Pokemon and Hamtaro (hey, it make be crappy anime but still anime).

Cool thing is, my parents ahve 100% trust in me when it comes to things I watch. For instacne,w hen I got my oUtlaw Star Box Set, it has a almost half-naked Melfina. My mom saw this and said "You know, I can watercolor over this." I siad thats ok. They know that it's ok cause I'm watchign this, same thing for Hellsing. They don't like the title but they know it's ok since I chose to watch it :)

My parents aren't quite into anime, though my mom has sat down and watched Saiyuki with me a couple times. They tolerate it, to say the least, and I'm grateful for that. XD My grandmother, however, is a different story. She...well, she strongly encourages my obsession. A couple times I caught her reading the tags on my UFO catcher plushes.

hmmm..... If only I was as fortunate. My brother absolutely loves to watch anime with me, but my mom really isn't into it. "So exaggerated" she says. However, my dad favors it somewhat, and my cousins are rising otaku since they're pretty much limited to whatever anime has been dubbed in China (Detective Conan's big over there.)

No such luck on my part. Dad thinks it's crap 'cuz it's from Japan, mom hates about anything animated, brother's almost as bad.

Wow. That sounds too familiar... other than that, I've gotten my younger brother into anime. I haven't been in contact with my other relatives for a few years so I haven't been able to get them to watch anime if they aren't already avidly watching it.

My parents like some of the movies. I got my dad Grave of the Fireflies for Christmas last year because he is such a World War II nut (LOVES studying about WWII, and this includes how civilians are affected). It was fun, because he was describing why stuff was happeining when it was, and what happened later. So, for our family, we weren't watching anime but a war movie. He really enjoyed it too.

My mom has seen Princess Mononoke (thought it was very good) as well as random moments of Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, Saiyuki, Card Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket, Pokemon and Outlaw Star. She seems VERY interested in seeing Cowboy Bebop, especially when my brother asked for the movie for Christmas.

Both of my parents want to see Spirited Away. It blew my mind when my dad asked about SA last year because he heard about it when it first came out in the movie theaters on CNN. Since he knew his daughter LOVED anime, he thought I'd know something about it. *grins* They want to see it even more since it won the Oscar last year.

My brother absolutely loves anime/manga, and did not need much help getting into it. We both got into it around the same time. I find his favorites list amusing since it is so varied (Saiyuki, Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, Fruits Basket, Evangelion, Chobits).

My sister is not into anime at ALL, and doesn't understand it.

I have turned my cousins into Otakus as well. Two in particular... I read them the Inu Yasha manga even before the anime came to the US (they love it), and I showed them all of Trigun before it appeared on Adult Swim. So, they were running around shouting "LOVE AND PEACE!" and having other people (including their freinds) have no idea what they were talking about. It was higly amusing when Trigun started to show on AS, especially when their friends finally realized what they were talking about. Now they all want to meet me... *sweatdrop*
They also liked Oh! My Goddess! They saw the OVAs and the movie.

Unfortunately no one else in my family is into anime to any extent. I have not actively tried to show them very much anime, but they have seen Rurouni Kenshin, G Gundam, Dragon Ball, and Dragon Ball Z (basically I watched it because they came on at dinner time, so I had a captive audience  ). My mom doesn't really care about it, although I'm sure she would like some of the better movies (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc.). My sister just likes to make fun of it, but that is more out of sibling rivalry than a genuine dislike of anime.

I can't say I've tried to much to get my family into anime. My brother use to watch whatever was in CN but isn't into it much anymore. Got him to watch the first episode of Trigun but he just backed away slowly -.- he's convinced its all the same *shrug* but oh well. When Outlaw Star and Tenchi and Gundam Wing were on CN my da use to watch it with me and my Brit but he always commited on hair color and facial expressions and ... and ... 0.o! Asked questions at the worse possible time. And well my mum, she's seen a bit of Kenshin I think, didn't hear much from here. But I believe its safe to say I'm the only one in my family who can even name more then 2 anime titles. Unless of course you count my godfather's sons. The oldest watchs a bit as does the third oldest. The second oldest and I just talked about Trigun at Thanksgiving  but the youngest tried to act like he knows everything. Actually quite cute come to think of it.

 my mom does the same thing. she'll watch it a little sometimes, but then she'll be like "yeah right! that that could really happen." or something like that. my 2 brothers are the only other ones who like anime in my house. my youngest brother is obcessed with inu-yasha. sometimes one of my sisters will watch a little bit sometimes.

My dad only watches anime when he's on the computer and I watch it in the room he's in, and he only pays attention to playfully make sarcastic comments about it. :eyeroll: My mom doesn't really pay attention and sometimes asks me "duh" questions. I'm not sure she understands it... My brother watches most of the animes with me. Some, he's not so interested in.

I got my best friend into DBZ!

My bro likes watching some kiddy anime (of which i have no interest) such as beyblade, my mum probably only vaguely reconises the word, same for my 12 year old sister, my 14 sister is...well I'm not comletely sure but she seems to be interested in what I'm doing sometimes and will come and watch for a few minutes, my dad thinks I'm sad and when I want to buy things like The Excel Saga and Kai doh maru will say things like 'that looks a bit girly' (the shame of it...) but he has seen Akira and Metropolis and liked them so he has some sense...thats about it.

PS My bro has seen Metropolis and likes that, oh, and I like some kiddy anime anime a bit. Yu-gi-oh's watchable (plus the monsters are interesting) and Card Captures was actually pretty good. Thats DEFINATALLY it.

Personally my mom was with me even since I started getting into anime itself. When I didn't even know what anime was (when I was around 4 to 7 years old) She would always buy/rent Japanese Animations/Shows! Thats weird.. But I loved it ever seince I was small! I was brought up with my mom on Transformers, Little Nemo, Power Rangers, and Voltron. Besides that, she knows ALOT of anime. Almost as much as me! Heck, I bet if I haven't went to ANN everyday, for the past 2 years, she would know as much as me about anime! Otherwise, my father is confused why I still watch 'Cartoons'. My grandfather doesn't mind, he sometimes watches Metropolis with me. My mom likes everything anime I like, that includes, Rurouni Kenshin, & X/1999.

*sigh* My mom finds a lot of it to be "crap," but I can't say I totally disagree either. I wish I could get her into more Miyazaki films and Rurouni Kenshin. She knows that I dont watch fanservicy stuff either. She doesn't hate it, but just doesn't care for it. After all they're just cartoons. THe Japanese always put "god into it. They always seem to put their beleifes in anime and aren't a afraid or ashamed. Boy aint that a lesson to Christians in America. My mom just doesnt want me to take in a alot of buddism is all.I don't think my dad cares at all. Whether it's Spongebob Squarepants or Zoids, they're cartoons. Well I can't say he's wrong.
I just wish he was more into it. Although, when he was a kid, no one would talk to you if you didnt catch the latest episode of speed racer, and he does know about the classic Astro Boy, which by the way is one of a my favorite new anime remakes.

nah, my parents don't really care for anime...I think they'll sleep through any form of animation. I was never supervised with whatever I watched once I reached my teens. Really.

My brother usually doesn't mess around with it except recently (not my doing at all). He says this, "Anime is like Hollywood. You have to dig through a whole bunch of garbage before you find some gems." Apparently, his gems are EVA and Witch Hunter Robin.

Well, I'm thankful that my family respects my form of entertainment and even encourages me in my manga drawing. ^^

My mum doesn't really care what I watch, as long as there isn't anything bad in it. My dad sometimes watches Yu-Gi-Oh, and he used to watch Pokemon with me when I was teh younger. My sister likes almost everything I like, including anime shows. I haven't spoke to other member of my family in awhile, although I don't think they care either.

My dad really likes Excel Saga (he loves that kind of humor) other than that my parents couldnt care less about anime, but they let me watch whatever I want to.
My sister likes just about anything anime.
Most of my extended family doesnt understand/care, but i resently found out that one of my uncles is big into anime, which is really cool.
I think its cool that some of your parents like anime, I wish mine did.
But at least they trust my judgment on what I watch(or mabey they just dont care?)

Beyblade? Kiddy? :(

>I like some kiddy anime anime a bit. Yu-gi-oh's watchable

I can see why Yu-Gi-Oh could be called kiddy, but if you can get past some of the corny lines and characters explaining the plot a billion times, I think it's really more in depth and cool than a lot of people think. The dubbers took WAY too much out and made it for lower ages. Grr, I say, GRR!
