Buying Anime Soundtracks

Postby R. Zion » Fri Feb 06, 2004 4:55 pm

I'm looking into buying the soundtracks for seasons 1 and 2 for the Big O and wanted to know where a good place to order anime soundtracks for a cheaper price.

Also, what other soundtracks would you recommend?

Fair warning - a ton of places that sell cheap soundtracks are selling bootlegs. This is sad but the truth. If you want the real deal, it's best to order from a place that people can verify sells authentic soundtracks...but you'll pay regular price...-_-;;

I -believe- (anyone feel free to correct me on this) CD Japan ( http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ ) is a reliable source for authentic soundtracks...but I couldn't give you an estimate of the price since it's in yen. They do have the Big O soundtracks though.

Personally, I like the music from Inuyasha but I don't have any of the CDs.

hmm, I know for sure http://www.planetanime.com (a local houston store) and http://www.chibitokyo.com/ both have a nice range of anime AND game music. Not sure if they carry big O though, but it's worth a shot.

I have one anime cd, and it's Operation 2 from Gundam Wing. Not really into J-pop myself, or Jazzy pop, but I liked the series and thought the soundtrack would be nice to have. *shrugs* I guess it was pretty good.

The Vision of Escaflowne (For Lovers Only) Soundtrack, the .Hack//SIGN soundtracks are both great. I enjoyed the Best of Slayers soundtrack (2 Disc set, but it helps if you're a fan of that series).

CDJapan *is* legit. I just bought a whole bunch of Ranma CDs from them, and they're the real deal Pony Canyon original issues, so I vouch for them (you can confirm the CD is being produced by whom you think it is; EverAnime and SonMay are the most frequent bootleggers you'll find, and I lament to admit I have a few of those).

Amazon only sells legit imports, but you'll pay a premium for them.

Btw, a good rule of thumb is that one Japanese yen = about one American cent, give or take (on my purchase, 104.5 yen = 1 US dollar). And always ship EMS. It's faster and more reliable.

I thought EverAnime was legit...dang. :bang:

Funny, you see a lot of stuff by them floating around at anime conventions.

Another place where you can get legit soundtracks is http://www.animenation.com., but the imported ones aren't usually cheap. Domestic anime soundtracks are becoming more common too, but I'm not sure if there's a domestic one for Big O.

104.5 yen per dollar? The yen has gone down in value... A little while back, yen was like 80 to the dollar... That does make things easier for me, but it's unfortunate I assume for the nation of Japan...

And a lot of anime vendors. I bought a number of Ranma CDs from GKWorld which I thought were legal, but they turned out to be SM/EA bootlegs. Someone has told me that these are actually not true bootlegs, but legal in Taiwan (just not anywhere else), but regardless of their legality in their home country, they definitely aren't legal here.

I guess $5 a CD should have tipped me off, ne? ^^;

Not all of them. I do see some SonMay titles there.

I generally use cdjapan to find out what the CD should look like, and then check eBay to try to find it. Of course, eBay is one of the worst places when it comes to mixing the legit with the non, but you can find some good stuff there.

I generally just try to wait until my anime store gets the CD I want. They make a big deal about only getting legit stuff, so I know I can trust them.
