Dragon Ball
Let us all applaud USSRGirl for her excellent Dragon Ball review! Great job, girl!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.
Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.
But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. I'm glad to see someone else out there likes Dragonball. With all the anti-Dragonball hatred on this site, it's hard to tell sometimes. And are the Bump Wars over? You've gone back to your original avatar I see.

I was under the impression that Funimation released the DVDs of Dragonball uncut, but I don't really have any experience with the anime so...

I don't hate Dragon Ball, just Dragon Ball Z. I'm actually quite interested in checking out Dragon Ball (especially since a certain of my favorite writers was influenced by it).

This is good to bring up here. As many of you know by now, FUNimation doesn't edit its anime anymore. I think this is a good change in the long run, and I wish 4Kids would do the same. Yes, there is offensive material in anime, but some stories need offensive material to make a point. I doubt seriously that either The Passion of the Christ or Schindler's List would've made the impact they did if their respective creators held back. I'm not saying children should be exposed to movies like these, far from it. I'm just saying that we can't make stories without offending people. Nor am I saying we should offend people. What I am saying is that we should use offensive material maturely. I think that companies like FUNimation are on the right track. We can't keep editing anime anymore. It may limit the audience, but it's worth the risk in the long run.

Just to get an entirely different opinion out there, I strongly dislike Dragonball (and GT) but don't really mind DBZ. I wouldn't want to actually watch it, but I like the world and I enjoy the manga.

Rock, I partially disagree with you there. Many anime (DB included) is NOT trying to make a point by nudity or offensive content. Violence is another story...but I agree with some of the cuts made by Funimation in the past. Older viewers can always get an uncut subbed version.

Erm...you may want to consider bumping up the rating there, Osaka. Maybe like 15+ and higher sexual content.
The scenes mentioned were not in the version of DB that I saw, though I remember similar instances of toilet humor from the manga.

I never really got the feeling from watching DB uncut that it deserved higher than 13+, compared to other anime. (It's also the official rating on the box) The perverted content does tend to lessen as the series takes on a more serious tone later on.

Since my general rule is, better to err on the side of caution, I went ahead, per USSRGirl's request, and bumped up the suggested age. If everything you said was in DB is in it, I wouldn't be comfortable with a thirteen year old seeing it.

Dragon Ball had such an impact on Japanese pop culture it has effected manga/anime in a profound way since. Many popular series' such as Rurouni Kenshin, One Piece, ect. have all had direct inspiration from DB's style.
Japanese Voice Actors -
Ever notice Tenshinhan and Hajime Saitou (Kenshin) seem similar? Same actor. He also did Mobile Suit Gundam's Bright Noa.
Bulma was also Meryl Strife in Trigun and Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear Solid.
Krillin's seiyuu voiced Monkey D. Luffy and Pilaf's seiyuu voiced Captain Buggy.
King Piccolo's seiyuu was the voice of Noboyuki Masaki and Katsuhito Masaki from Tenchi Muyo.
Yamucha's seiyuu did the voice of Super Mario in a Mario OVA, as well as Amuro Ray from Mobile Suit Gundam.
