Best anime for newbies

What anime would you give to someone who knows almost nothing about anime? I think the following would work:
Dragonball Z (it did get a lot of fans started)
Big O (best robot anime for newbies, IMHO)
Spirited Away (it did win an Oscar)
Azumanga Daioh (best view of Japanese life)
Whisper of the Heart (ditto)

It would depend on what they usually enjoy to watch.For example for a Trekker I would pick either the Seikai Saga(Crest/Banner/Banner of the Stars II)or Geneshaft or something like Last Exile.For someone who likes mysteries something like Detective Conan/Case Closed.For someone who likes Westerns try
Trigun.But as I am trying to point out get to know what they really like to watch and then recommend an anime series.

My firsts were Utena and Slayers. Now I would NOT reccomend the former, but the latter is amazing! Also Cardcaptors or Tsubasa or Magic Knight Rayearth- any of CLAMP's happy animes (not X)

Cowboy bebop. Its the Universal anime that everyone seems to like.

^ I didn't like it first-watch.

umm...my first anime was Big O & I've been hooked ever since. however, although rocklobster suggested it, I dont know if it's a good newbie anime or not. It's kinda far-fetched. However, I did get my bro hooked on the stuff through it as well. It must work, lol.

Not sure what would be good for people new to anime. Personally i'd prolly get people watching whatever their tastes leaned toward. A popular anime that wouldn't be too obscure & hard to find. Last Exile, Wolf's Rain, Tsubasa Chronicle, and some other stuff depending on the person. (lol..not very decisive am i)

I showed my brother "Castle in the Sky" and he actually liked it. He wasn't much for the other Miyazaki films (though I wasn't either).

And, once again, I plug in One Piece. My brother and sister both like it, and they typically despise anime. Gotta tell ya something, ne?

I'd have to say Rurouni Kenshin, as it was what pulled me into anime. Also, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Tsubasa Chronicle, Magic Knight Rayearth, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop. Maybe FullMetal Alchemist; it all depends on what kind of person the newbie is, really. But yeah, those would be my suggestions.

Usually I ask someone where their general interests lie in regard to live action movies. Whether it's Sci-Fi, Romance, Romantic Comedies, Action, Thrillers, etc. I can usually then determine what they might like, and what I can therefore recommend, in anime titles.

Definitely Cowboy Bebop. It's an a must-see classic.
I'd also recommend, some older animes such as: Dragon ball/DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Ronin Warriors, and Hajime no Ippo.

All of my friends that hate every anime known to man try to find a way to prove this isn't an anime.

Yes, they like it, but I can agree that Spike's hair and shoes look sort of dumb and cancel out any possible American-Made Live Action adaption.

Sorry, but I've yet to see a good Live Action movie based on an anime with a full Japanese cast. "Honey and Clover" the live action movie, looks like it's going to make me throw up after completing the first season (it's like Fruits Basket but more aimed for guys).

Check out the short-lived "Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star" manga.

Um.. Naruto mebbe? xD; I guess I'd recommend mainstream anime 'cause.. well, isn't part of the reason they're mainstream is 'cause lotsa people like 'em? xD

I finally got around to checking more of the anime.

While my bro did enjoy the manga, something about the anime makes me say "no". :/

Well, I just kept watching the episodes and felt, "This isn't very... interesting."
It may be because they were trying to handle alot of the stuff in the manga, but they spread it out too much and threw into too many of those "emotional" clips (though the manga does that now anyways).

And that style seems like the kind of anime style that would turn off people who aren't really into it.

I dunno. Just how I see it.

Sure, it's fun to see some animated action scenes, but even some of those can be broken up (but again, that's in most anime anyways now, it seems).

I think the naruto anime is generally better than the manga. Excluding the filler episodes and some of the later ones where fights dragged forever. The first like.. 100 episodes are majestic.

The first 26 episodes of Cowboy Bebop were majestic, so this newbie should probably start with that.

I wasn't fond of 'Brain Scratch'.

i second that. brain scratch and some other episodes were rather boring and didn't really interest me. some episodes were pretty unusual as well. cowboy bebop is definitely a awesome, yet mysterious, anime.
