Personally I liked it... but a lot of the humor does not translate well to the dub. Yes I would have preferred less nudity but the parody aspects were good.
[Edit]However, given the review of the anime I imagine I should clarify why my opinion is different.
Personally I think the key points of the anime involved when the people were clothed and not mentioned in the review such as the Raiders of the Lost Ark parodies, the parodies of anime hair, the fact that the entire plot is based on two people who think the other is here to help them, and are completely clueless to the carnage they cause, the aphasic dialogue brought on because they do not understand each other, the hapless rival with anime hair. The dialogue is spoken faster than Kotono Mitsuishi on the "Next Episode" segements of Excel Saga.
Nudity, yes and gratuitous and because of it should be considered "R" rated, but about par for your typical 1990's OVA. Personally I wouldn't call it "soft hentai" Compared to other stuff out there, I think it is less gratuitous than say the original Tenchi Muyo, or Knights of Ramune (which was truly offensive), or Mahoromatic. Certainly less erotic than the fanservice of Love Hina manga.
This anime was meant to be watched subtitled. Media Blasters handled this poorly, giving Backwards subtitles when the whole point in some scenes was that nobody was supposed to understand what they were saying. The problem with the dub is that Media Blasters missed the point and could not adapt the original concept to the dub.
That's my POV on Rane anyway.
