Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Yes, I test video games for a living (Praise God)

Postby Saint Kevin » Fri Jun 16, 2006 12:15 pm

This is really a praise report, but I put it here in the video games section. Starting Monday, I will be the newest Quality Assurance Tester at a third-party testing company here in Aurora.

Thank you guys that have prayed for me in the past regarding my future and my job search. You guys are awesome. I got back home from Disneyworld/Atlanta/Michigan (it's a long story that I'll throw in my LJ at some point) on June 5th, and I'll be starting this job on the 19th. It only took two weeks to get a job I've dreamed of having for a long time. That's definitely by the grace of God, I assure you.

Unfortunately, I won't really be able to tell you the stuff I'll be working on (other than maybe genre), but maybe when the games are released, I can give you some titles or something. That's just how the non-disclosure agreements go in the industry these days. Game developers have been acutely paranoid since Half-Life 2 had its source code leaked.

Anyway, maybe I'll be able to give some unique perspective to the Video game radio show now that I'm an industry insider. Hopefully I can contribute a segment or something. Regardless, I look forward to sharing what I can with you guys about the life of a "video game tester" (it will be in my LJ, I assure you).

God is awesome.

Does the company whose game is being tested cover expenses? You know, the Mountain Dew bill is really going to add up... ;)

Heh. Most of the jobs I looked into testing games involved having to play a lot of boring sports-based games.

It might be a living, but it's not one I'd enjoy, I'm afraid.

Good luck! Banbarimasu!

I'm glad to hear that you got into the career that you wanted. Now I just pray that you can retain your love for video games in general and not get burned out on everything you'll have to play.

This is part of why I never considered this as a real career option. I like a good video game but I wouldn't want to play them as intensely as testers have to, especially for all the games I wouldn't be interested in.

Way to go, man! God bless with that. o.o/

Ditto what Mith and UC said. Personally, I think I'll find making games more fun than playing them like testers do. @_@

Good luck, though!

Come on guys, Sports games are awesome.

Don't tell me you can just go outside andp lay a sport because you can't have your own organized team on the NFL.

If someone is to use that arguement, I can take turns fist-fighting with my friend.

Also, don't testers have to point out where the code goes bad, too? So it takes at least some programming ability, at least to be able to identify where the bad code is? I completely agree, though... Having to play video games for a living would strip the fun out of my favorite hobby... Unless it was my own games, that's different (I loved playing my own games on Klik n Play, RPG Maker, Multimedia Fusion, and the 3 different forms of BASIC I learned)

Oh, and sports games, for the most part, suck... I hate sports, and playing an NFL game (or a MLB game) is like watching sports on TV... Sports are only fun when you actually play (sorry tom, it's just true for me) I dont' flipping care about NFL teams (or MLB teams) unless I'm there to watch it and I only really like being there with people, not the actual game... Playing baseball with friends (for real) is fun, baseball videogames are not...

I would'nt expect anyone here to like sports when the Red Sox and the Patriots aren't their home team. You can have the Celtics. ;)

Everyone just complains about having to play sports games and read codes. DUDE, its better than some boring old desk job.

Hope you have fun with the new job.
