Voices of a Distant Star

I know there have been other topics about this, but the newest one is 2 years old, so...

Anyway, I watched this last night, and it has replaced Outlaw Star as my favorite anime of all time. It actually brought tears to my eyes. It is an AWESOME anime. Really sad, though. I have a question...
Does Mikako die in the end? It looked like the arms of her mech were gone.
You know, for a "big, tough manly-geek" that I am, I love, nay, ADORE, this movie. It's insanely sad, though...
Oh, no, no, no. She's still in love. She can't die. LOVE WILL BRING HER BACK, I SAY!
Well, unfortunately...
I personally think so. It is suggested from one of the last scenes that her starship -- the last one -- was saved, but it appears she dies in the process. Not at all unusual in Asian films, short stories, videos, and whatnot. But we know her love lives on.
I've heard so many great things about this OVA. Unfortunately, it just didn't affect me the same way it did everyone else. It's impressive visually speaking, and I give my props to the creator. I just found it slow/boring. She and Her Cat, on the other hand, almost justified the purchase for me. That was awesome.

Personally, I don't think that
she died. If you look carefully in the scene in which she see "herself", look carefully and you'll see what looks very much like a wedding ring on her hand, if I'm not mistaken. Furthermore, her otherself says "Don't worry, you'll see him again." Or something to that effect. I think she made it. But, then again, I'm a hopeless romantic, so you can't take my opinion. ;)
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Wasn't there a manga or something in the works about Naboru-kun joining the military to find her again? I could have sworn there was something along those lines, and that in that mysterious-possible-manga, it precluded a negative to our spoiler-box thoughts.

I concur. I respect the achievement it represents, but I didn't really actually enjoy it.

I felt quite some pain while watching it (on behalf of the main characters >_<) and makes me appreciate the fact that I'm not really -that far away- from my loved ones.

Good movie; the fact that it was produced with such limited resources is commendable.
I assumed that she never met him again physically and the "I'm here" statement was from a spiritually aspect
I agree with mangafanatic.
And I thank Shoo for pointing it out to me. I don't think she would have a wedding ring if it only meant they would meet in the after-life. If I recall correctly she never wore any other jewelry in the show, and the shot lingered for a moment on the ring, giving it some significance.
Weill, I'm not really sure but
I figured that if she had survived, she would have beat her last message back home since it was going to take years to get there. By the time her second message reached Earth, she had probably already fought the final battle shown in the movie. The Earth scenes were moving progressively into the future relative to her scenes.

THey didn't know the way to Earth, remember? One of her messages was, "We still haven't found our way back to Earth."
