What If AU Is Not Renewed By G4?

Postby mitsuki lover » Sun Apr 09, 2006 2:10 pm

So worse case scenario and G4 doesn't renew Anime Unleashed which cable network would you want the AU animes to go to?Myself, since AU was originally Sci Fi oriented I think that would be the best fit. Then again with
Afro Samurai on the horizion Spiketv might want to take a stab at them.
Take in mind this is just speculative, and as far as we know AU has not been cancelled on G4 as of yet.
The reason I didn't mention AS is that:1)since they already have their own anime they probably wouldn't be interested and 2)where would they put them on the schedule?
So what's your opinion?
If AU is cancelled where would YOU want it to land next?
And remember this is all speculative and nothing factual so don't panic.

I don't actually have G4 and thus can't watch Anime Unleashed... but I've been reading that G4 has no interest in keeping it.

I just happen to turn in G4 this last week and they were showing GIS around 11 PM. I think they moved it up to an earlier time.

Anime Unleashed was G4's anime block, going back to the TechTV days. It was home to some exclusive series like Last Exile, R.O.D. the TV, Crest of the Stars, and RahXephon. Early on it ran 5 nights a week, and was eventually increased to 7. But this past fall, it was cut back to only 1 night a week (with a repeat or 2). And in March, it disappeared from the G4 schedule with little explanation.

As for where it would end up... My guess is that the leading contender would be Comcast's Anime Selects On Demand service, since Comcast (parent company of G4) would still hold the rights to most of the series. But if the licenses could be snagged by someone else, Sci-Fi wouldn't be a bad choice if they showed interest in getting an anime block going. With the new FUNimation block on Colours TV, I could also see some upstart network grabbing some of them.

Hopefully more cable and satellite providers will start adding channels like the Anime Network and FUNimation channel. That would alleviate some of our anime appetite.

Tsk... considering the direction that G4 is taking with their programming selection, I wouldn't be surprised if the Anime Unleashed block never returns. Still... it would be great if they did bring it back... and stop showing crappy shows like Colorful!

In my experience, they hardly ever ran any given show for more than about two weeks at a time.

I was reading what they had on the AU forum yesterday or Saturday and the G4 rep.said she left a note for her boss about the situation and hoped to get back with an answer some time this week.
Really one of the strangest things to happen.

To be honest, AU was the only channel I ever considered watching anime broadcast. I guess all that would be left if it would disappear would be renting\purchasing DVD's. It's really a shame that there is a possibility of the channel being let go.

AU was great for a while. Last Exile and R.O.D. rocked completely. But G4 in my opinion has gone almost completely down the drain, flushing AU down with it.

The only title I was introduced to through AU was Dual. Other than that I was already collecting the series I really liked (Last Exile, ROD). I had no interest in any of the recent shows. The commecials every 5 minutes and all the Girls Gone Wild video adds left a bad taste in my mouth. I stopped watching long ago.

RahXephon was the one new anime that harked back to old school AU when they had Dual,Silent Mobius,Crest/Banner of the Stars, etc.all the time.
