My Neighbors The Yamada's

Postby KhakiBlueSocks » Fri Mar 10, 2006 11:08 am

I LOVE this movie! I just saw it for the first time this week, and It's really great! The animation style is like a newspaper's funny pages, but it's such an excape from the overcolored, computer giga-slammed animation style of modern anime! The dialogue is really funny, and the characters are hillarious!

I must admit I had my doubts when I saw the Disney banner on the top of the DVD case in the library, but I'm pleased to say, Disney didn't screw this up!

Anyone else seen this movie? Share your thoughts!

...when exactly WAS the last tiem Disney screwed up a Ghibli dub anyhow? They do a great job on them! (Ok, the subtitling's another story...) but meh, either way!

Never did see this movie though... posted about it a looooong time ago and didn't even get ONE response! If it aired on Turner's Ghibli month, I would've watched it. But since I didn't, most likely won't check it out :/

Eh, it was okay. I liked the art style for maybe the first 15 minutes, then it just got irritating. Still, a few beautifully animated scenes using the overly simplistic style. The lack of a real plot made it difficult to watch in one sitting. And the film just wasn't that funny.

But that's my opinion.

Thanks for posting! With this animation style, you either love it or hate it, so it's no suprise that you're not a big fan of it. "Yamada's" was based off a comic strip that runs in japanese papers, so that's why it doesn't have a strict "plot" so to speak. It's kinda like the "Peanuts" cartoons/comic strips done by the late, great Charles M. Schultz. I popped in my copy of "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and I discovered that the layout of the movies are almost similar.

Exactly. I have never been a fan of the Peanuts either (*prepares to dodge somethhing thrown by Peanuts fans), so you're right, that's probably why I wasn't really into it. :thumb:

However, I do respect the filmmakers for taking such an artistic step in making the movie this way. It really is creative filmmaking.

Whew! Got that out of my system! It's okay, though. I'm a bona-fide "Peanuts" fan, so that's the prime reason why I grew attached to "Yamada's"...I don't see any non-Peanuts fan's going for it, IMHO.

BTW, I renewed the DVD for another week at the library! I swear, I'm going to feel separation anxiety when I have to turn it back in next Saturday!
