Blocking sites with Firefox?

I'd recommend checking to see if there's an extension to do what you want. Most times I would recommend doing this at the OS level, though. Usually when I want to block something, I want to do it in all browsers. HIH

Yeah, I'd be interested in this as well... Maybe one with a password block on it so no one could unblock them... There are a number of problem sites I'd like to have blocked on my computer so I couldn't visit them in times of weakness, but even blocking sites that show up when I don't want them to would be nice... I'd like to block flash files from certain domains, or just block certain domains alltogether (like any doubleclick sites, or adult sites) Even the cookie blocking on Firefox, which now exists in IE, would be better if I could just block or allow cookies alltogether from entire domains instead of just iwo2.domain.com and hp9.domain.com and pf07o.domain.com and randomlygeneratedprefix.domain.com

... IE can block sites alltogether? Is that true? I may be going back to IE... Maybe... How do I do that in IE?

at least a very old version of IE could... I remember seeing it in my school's lab several years back, to prevent people from downloading AIM.

Extensions for firefox in this area are bad. I've tried a few and they actually end up blocking many pages here on CAA... which shouldn't be blocked. *sigh*

I use Adblock for this purpose. It's not a perfect solution since it does not have password protection, but is a decent first step. Also has the benefit of being easy to quickly block images/ads that are disturbing/annoying.

Another solution along the lines of what Mithrandir was suggesting (blocking for all programs at the OS level) is discussed in this thread

Firewall software and hardware can allow you to block specific sites. I use my Netgear router/firewall to block some sites. So far, it seems to work with some popups as well
