Akira was the first anime that I ... was subjected to. It very nearly turned me off of anime forever. Thankfully I kept an open mind for other anime.

After I saw Spirited Away for the first time, I felt like I was waking up from a really weird dream -- not a nightmare exactly, but a really creepy, disquieting dream.

Betterman had some kinda scary moments in it. I don't usually dig horror stuff much, but Betterman was cool enough to keep me watching.

This seems more like a "what anime shocked you the most" and not what anime scared you the most.

Anyway, I don't think any anime has ever scared me, I watch a lot of horror movies so I don't scare easily, and the fact that it's animation instead of live action kind of takes me out of it. Something that would be scary in a live action movie isn't scary in animated form.

When it comes to shocked though, I'd definitly have to say Ninja Scroll and Ninja Ressurection, especially ressurection. Episode two of that series was disgusting, and it's hentai-ish scenes were even worse than Ninja Scroll's!

But neither of those two compare to the ultimate disgusting anime. Genocyber!!!!! Several years ago I rented the first episode from hollywood video and I, the hardcore horror fan of such movies as Evil Dead and Event Horizon, was shocked and disgusted at the level of gore. It was insane. It was like the Battle Royale Manga times 10.

I know what you mean, that art is horrible. Done well, but still horrible. If the art had been decent, I probably would have watched the whole thing, but my eyes were begging me to stop.

Actually, it is disorder... It's post traumatic stress disorder, not syndrome... PTSD...

Anime that scared me - End of Evangelion, Akira (the first time I watched it, anyhow) Project A-ko (just scared that my parents would walk in... I was, like, 13 at the time), some of Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Last rennaisance... Akira scared be purely for violence... I actually closed my eyes a few times... Second Rennaisance was one of the last things that bothered me for violence out of anything I ever watched, except where stuff is ripped out like piercings... That still bothers me, for some reason, but an exploding head doesn't... Lain creeped me out a couple times, but I liked it... End of Eva... That was different... That just put me into all sorts of dark emotions... I was not good for the two weeks after I finished that movie... It took me a couple days to watch it, even, because I kept stopping from things that bothered me... I've seen more violent anime, sadder anime (like fireflies), more sexually explicit anime... I don't know why, it just bothered me more than any other movie I've seen... The way it totally destroyed the characters I grew to like... Ok, that's all I'll say about it anyhow...

So, yeah... That's about it, that I can think of... Actually, I think "Now and Then, Here and There" scared me a bit too... That was another hard one to watch... Didn't like that one at all...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evcNPfZlrZs Watch this movie なう。 It's legal, free... And it's more than its premise. It's not saying Fast Food is good food. Just watch it.

Come to think of it, there's one episode of Cowboy Bebop that scares me. If I watch the series again I think I'll just skip that one. I forget what it's called, but it's the one with the psycho killer bouncing fat man who laughed maniacally. If you've seen it, you'll know which one I mean.

I believe it's called "Pierrot La Fou" or something like that. It's supposed to be a reference to Pagliacci, but I don't know much about opera, so I don't know how that works.

Figured I'd put in my two cents.

"Cry of the Chimera" from FMA didn't "scare" me, but I was surprised beyond all reason. That one line, "Can I ask you one more question? WHERE are Nina and Alexander?" will MESS ME UP for the REST of my life...lol. Not really, but it threw me for a loop. The whole time I had suspected that Shao Tucker was either a psychopath, or deeply grieved over his wife's disappearance. (Hence the burned drawing.) He was both...but waaaaay more of a psychopath. I was FREAKED OUT.

But other than that, I haven't really put myself in a position to be scared by anime. Grossed out and immediately changed the channel a few times, but scared?

OH! Wait, there is one more. Both Beelzemon and, um..."Scary Jeri," had their moments. Beelzemon laughing with his spider hands out like Freddy Krueger...frightening.

And Scary Jeri? "All better now...all better now!" O.O My sister thought it was FUNNY, she's not easily weirded out.

ooh..me too. That dude was just odd. And apparently he was a product of some wack experiment??

another thing that freaked me out was that episode of GITS:SAC with the guy who liked to skin his victims alive. very sick...especially with the sound effects. o.o

The only episode of Cowboy Bebop I've ever seen freaked me out, the one with the evil thing from the fridge...

I don't like violent/scary stuff, but I have a compulsion that forces me to watch movies all the way through even if I don't like them, because I want to know how they end. :shady:

 Oh my gosh, yes!! I love that episode (Toys in the Attic, I believe it's called).

As for anime that scared me...
Well, Blood: The Last Vampire freaked me out because I had to venture into my dark backyard after watching it to feed my dog. *shudders*

Pierrot Le Fou of Cowboy Bebop seriously terrified me when I first saw it, because when I was 12, I watched it alone late at night on Adult Swim.

I only saw one episode of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, but it kind-of grossed me out when I saw the main character shoot a guy's foot off...

Hence the Paranoia part.

What I hate is those parts in anime where a messenger is running up to tell somebody something, and he gets shot while he's talking. I've seen that a couple times now, it's a popular scare device.

Paranoia Agent was freaky at times. Akira was also disturbing, but I don't know if I'd call it scary.

Also, Little Nemo scared me when I was 5 or 6.. and I think it was an American-Japanese production, so it's kind of an anime ^^;

Anime that scared me. . . .

Boogiepop Phantom. It was just. . . yeah. *eye begins to twitch*
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.
