So long as the thread is here...I remember Flying House being on when I was a little kid, but I didn't watch it, certainly never realized it was anime. Never heard of Superbook...well, the name sounds a little familiar.

Man, that was a long time ago. I wonder why they chose to do them in anime style, instead of a Looney Toons thing for an American audience. Is there a fansite for these shows?

Superbook was made by Tatsunoko, which made speed racer. It was a Japanese show to begin with, not an american show immitating anime art...

Hey Everyone,

I'm one of the producers working on the re-imagine Superbook series. Here is the history of how and why the original series was produced.

Superbook History

CBN’s animation series, Superbook, was born out of a vision that Pat Robertson and the leadership of CBN had for Japan in 1979. The project was largely centered around CBN’s desire to promote the Bible to the Japanese public in partnership with Word of Life Press and Ken Taylor of Living Bibles International.

During the period 1979 - 1981, CBN approached Young and Rubicon to find the best way to reach the Japanese culture. Young & Rubicon conducted research to determine the best way to promote interest in the Bible and they concluded that Japanese children would be most open to Bible stories and that the popular genres of animation and comic books (called Mangas) would be effective media sources for achieving this goal.

CBN then sent Dick Thomas, CBN’s Marketing V.P., to Japan for research and development purposes. Thomas met with TV executives and market researchers and returned with the recommendation that CBN should get involved with television animation (anime) as the type of program to communicate the message of the Gospel most effectively.

CBN’s strategy included hiring the Yomiko Advertising Agency to work on the Bible promotion project]John.Schafer@cbn.org[/email]

YAY! Thanks for the info, Mr. Producer!

Superbook was probably my favorite show when I was little, and now my sister watches it. It's the only anime my mother will ALLOW her to watch, but regardless, it's fun stuff, and I found it remarkably truer to the bible stories than a lot of American cartoons. Of course there was *ahem* censoring where certain adult parts of the story came into play, but not so much as to cheapen it like I've seen some stories do. Gizmo was funny, the dog was cute, aw, who doesn't love Superbook?

Heh.... we watched it for years - too, both of them, actually. They're still on Sky Angel. Um... honestly, the shows were good, but I was surprised at some of the adult content. It didn't seem to go past Episode 1 for the first Superbook series (Adam and Eve), but I was very surprised to see a full-frontal nude shot of a boy in Flying House (and this was not Barbie-like, either). If you enjoy the shows and want to introduce them to others, that's fine; just stand warned and keep your eyes open.

Hm. I don't remember full frontal nudity, but I could have faulty memory. In any case, it's pretty clean, isn't it? You mean...FULL full frontal? O.O

Yeah. *blinks* TV broadcast? If you mean on TV, yeah. Funny thing is, we watched it for years, too. Like, since I was about 6 (you do the math). Never saw that 'till now. I believe other than that, it's been clean.

If you enjoy the shows and want to introduce them to others, that's fine] You call that "adult content"? Take the lesson of Adam and Eve that in God creating them naked did not mean that they were created deficiently, nor even, does "And they knew they were naked" actually have to do with a lack of clothing, but rather a lack of clothing for the purity of the soul, that of having the knowledge of good and evil but the refusal to not do evil. Any evil in nudity stems not from nudity itself, but in the hearts and souls, as Paul testifies "I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean." (Romans 14:14 ESV)

Nudity then is different from nudity now; God Himself clothed Adam and Eve afterward, so if there was no need for it, why did He? And yes, I do. I don't think children need to see such. If nudity is evil because of the condition of our hearts and souls, then there is no reason to show it on TV, where our eyes, which are connected to both, will be able to see it.
