Time spent without anime?

How long have you guys been able to go without any access to anime?

For the years I have been an anime fan, I came to the realization that I've never gone beyond a week without anime. With the DVD's that I have in my collection, I somehow find the time every other day to watch it.

It's a little scary when I think how addicting the stuff can be, especially if seven days is the longest you can survive without it. ^_^

Well, it depends on what you mean by "going without anime". If you mean going without watching/reading anything, I can go for two, three weeks at a time. Heck, I haven't read a tankouban all the way through in a week and haven't watched anything for...forever. o_o But if you mean not doing anything anime related as well, then, ahem...I can't go more than a couple days. XD

I've gone for quite a while before. In fact I rarely buy anime DVDs. I stick to weird/unknown crap and just buy stuff I know I really want to see. I never ever just buy something (aside from that $4 Dai Guard DVD).

Before I started downloading the original One Piece, I hadn't really watched any anime in about four or five months. I think it was AnimeHeretic that said elsewhere when he first got into anime, he thought everything was unique and awesome, but then he realized that a lot of it was just as bland as American stuff. And that's the phase I'm at right now. Yes, there's quite a few anime series I think are awesome, but by and large lately, all the new releases I've seen are just not interesting or are poorly executed. When I'm done with One Piece, I probably won't watch any anime for a while, just because there's nothing out that I think is any good.

When I have something to watch, I watch it. But the only anime that I've actually watched all the way through more than once is Full Moon wo Sagashite (I cried like a baby both times. . . it's so good. . .), and the rest of the time after I've seen something, I won't watch it again for a while. And I can go without anime in general it for a while. But if there's a new volume of manga that comes out that I'm collecting, you can be sure I'll be out to buy it before anyone else even knows it's been released!

Well, it depends on what you mean by "going without anime".

Originally I was referring to the substance itself, which is simply watching an anime episode or reading a manga volume.

But I suppose things that are anime-related (going to conventions, working on fanfiction\art) would also work as well.

Don't forget that there are PLENTY of titles out there that are older or lesser known that happen to be quite excellent. You don't have to just watch newer series. : P

What about: Now and Then, Here and There; Berserk; Giant Robo; Master of Mosquiton; Neon Genesis Evangelion; Gasaraki; Shin! Getter Robo; GunBuster: Aim For the Top!; Nadia; Kare Kano; Blue Seed.... I could go on.

Check out some older titles. Don't be afraid to go outside of the genres you like, either. Back when I first got into anime, it had to be action or something. Once I tried new stuff I found out that my heart was really with the psychological fare, and human drama (those being my favourite genres).

It isn't something I consider, really. Now that I sometimes watch the anime on Adult Swim, I typically go 1-2 weeks without seeing anything. Prior to that it would be more like 4-5 months, when I would find a new series I enjoyed and watch all of it.

Except for Mushishi, no new series has really caught my interest. When I find a "new" series it is generally just an older one I've stumbled across.

Two weeks. XD I went to this two-week art camp once, and I was like, DYING to watch some InuYasha, or anything. XD I did buy 2 volumes of Furuba while I was there, and a Rurouni Kenshin wallscroll. I also brought my Jpop cd's, and an iPod shuffle full of more Jpop. So technically, I was without anime, but I had my various ways of getting it. XD

And horror of horrors, I went without the CAA chat for an entire week. Lucky for me that I found a computer lab at the end of week 1. XD

I'm only a casual viewer, so I regularly go months without viewing any anime, much less new shows.

I tend to watch a series and then have a waiting period before finding something else to watch, usually a couple months. As I don't have access to any TV stations it can be longer before I find something else that interests me, but as I just started enjoying anime about three years ago I have found plenty of good older series to watch lately.

Same as Rad Dreamer. 2 weeks. No access to anime at all, except for CAA (if that even counts) That was while I was on vacation in Florida. But when I got back, oh boy. I almost pulled an all-nighter just watching my dvds. (was just a TAD more obsessed back then...^_^)

I've been in a similar situation myself recently, where I went about 2-3 months without watching any, but I've been watching a little bit recently (past week or so) as a way of forcing myself to take a little personal time.

Watching anime rather frequent. If I get on a series that already completed (say Gundam SEED) then tend to watch a good bit until I finish all the episodes. Seeing that I'm running a business as well as am an employee, these retreats to anime land are a mini vacation for me.

I don't watch near as much anime as I used to. The thing is now I'm just plugged in to the genre and the people that like it, so even if I'm not actually watching it I'm around people (at least online) that like it alot so its kinda hinted at in conversation.

I have been noticing lately bad quality of anime though. The limited movement and stuff like that... I love seeing higher budget stuff now instead of just the mouth moving and the screen sliding across a picture >.>;;

all and all I'm much more into manga now because most of the time its just higher quality. the "dramatic pauses" and eye shots in low budget animes have been getting to me lately.

There's also the fact that I've decided not to download licensed stuff anymore. Until I got a netflix account I was going very long periods without actually watching anything. It's not as hard as people make it sound <.<;; When I first cracked up all my downloaded anime cds it was kinda hard but it felt good at the same time, you know?

I guess every week or so? I don't usually think of anime as something other than the rest of the entertainment I watch. A more fair question would be how many movies I'd watch in a week (like, one a day). An anime DVD just occasionally ends up in my lineup.

Two years. Yah, I had help though. We had to cut off the satellite for two years. We have it back now, and itz'all good. But, I have to restrain myself, lest I get to obsessed again.

Well in a target rich environment, it's often the lowest quality that is dominant. However with enough looking you'll be surprised what you find.

Mayasaki's work is of course top line, but there's a lot of quality works out there, just got to look around. Even though philosophically Noein (which I really enjoy) might not match up, it's anime is top notch. Aria the Animation is done very very well. The work done on Last Exile was excellent too (little older anime, but worth revisiting).

As you mentioned, manga's fill in the gap very well though, when needed.

The only way to get anime and manga here is basically to buy or hire them or have pay tv. I don't have pay tv and I don't hire all that much but I have bought some anime and manga but not much.
I've gone several months without watching anime (because I don't have much).

I could have written that, except no anime even ON pay-TV. Basically if I'd want to see a specific anime I must either (a) visit a friend who has it or I'd have to buy Madman imports from Australia that they began selling here recently, but they don't always work on our DVD players.

Interesting. I generally view "unlicensed" anime that's been sub'd by a fan club. So I use torrents to get my anime. Have a number of titles that have gone "licensed" but I don't enjoy the dub'd as much as the sub'd version, so I keep them on my system.

March 7th Disney is releasing all the works of Studio Ghibli, so you might be able to rent that from a local vid shop (or get it netflex style)

I haven't watched a couple of months.. The last anime I've seen were Gundam SEED Destiny (followed a year) and Soukyuu No Fafner... I can go without anime easily compared to several years ago. ...trying to make anime not my bible.
