Sticky this, please!
Here's why I like anime:
It presents the world with all its faults and all its beauty. It rarely sugar-coats the stories. So many titles are just awe-inspiring to watch: .hack//sign, Millennium Actress, and any Ghibli title. And the titles actually end! (OK, so we don't always get closure. *coughWolf's Rain, Big O*cough)
So fess up, why do you watch anime?

I think I like anime because life in the show is so different from life in the real world. Anime Characters have many friends, they have interesting adventures, they fall in love and there first love actually works out, The men are beautiful and perfect, the women are easy to relate to. THe music is great, the stories open the imagination, they talk funny when you press the audio button on the bottom of the remote.

THat's why I like anime.

I got into anime because of the frenetic pace of the comedies I was watching. Once upon a time, I believed all the anime hype of it being fresh and original etc. But after several years of wtching it exclusively, I noticed that it was terribly cliched and stale and there was very little talent... most of the shows imitating classic original series of a decade earlier... Tenchi Clones etc.

The stuff I kept was either unusually witty in the approach (Excel Saga, Abenobashi, Azumanga Daioh, Urusei Yatsura, Miami Guns, Nadesico, Sailor Moon) or was unusually talented with the stories (Nadia, 12 Kingdoms, Gundam Movie Trilogy, Cowboy Bebop, and a few movies).

When I got rid of the stuff I thought wasn't worth keeping, I went from close to a thousand (literally) dvds to around 11 series and some movies

^ LoL. what i think you suffered from was overkill :p (1000? that's insane. i'm jealous. but that's insane) however, ill give you credit for having good taste in what you kept!

hm...why do I watch anime? It makes me smile. The odd conglomeration of typically unrealistic situations, lovable characters, and addictive animation makes it worth it. Sure a series leaves me with feeling like I just got off a bad acid trip, but STILL...the good experiences are worth it. All of that makes me smile. :)

Somewhere along the line I developed a psychological condition that causes me to be repulsed by the human form unless it is stripped of detail and surrounded on all sides by solid black lines.

Because some of my favorite series happen to be anime and/or manga.

DBZ got me into anime.

I`ll add manga. The reason I like manga is because it costs 2 $ more than American comic book with 20 pages infiested with Super hero powers.

I got into anime because I loved the artwork in Silent Mobius plus the plotline really got me addicted.

Because Iria was really cool, and I hadn't seen anything like it before.

That and purple robots are awesome. Especially ones with mouths.

The characters themselves are the definitive reason to why I am hooked on the stuff. I could care less about the plot or the artwork of any given series - as long as I am able to enjoy the characters and their interactions with each other, then the show has worked it's magic on me (though a good plot and animation adds to my enjoyment).

The fact that the creators\writers are able to fine-tune their characters into 'people' is what amazes me about the attention to detail put forth in most anime. Characters in anime aren't always cardboard cutouts and can be depicted as fallible individuals, which is why there seems to be a layer of reality that exists in a good number of titles that I have seen.

i got into it, b/c i've always loved pencil sketching creative characters, and anime certainly portrays many many creative beautifully crafted characters. I like the expressiveness of the eyes and stuff in anime. Lately though, i've become interested in shonen animes like Naruto.

my first anime that i got into was probably Digimon

Brett: "Why do they call it tourist season if you can't shoot them?"

I got into anime when reality TV was starting, my escape from reality you could say...
