Why the different names for episodes?

Postby rocklobster » Sun Feb 05, 2006 7:48 am

Why do some anime use different names for episodes?
  • Blue Gender=Factors
  • Cowboy Bebop=Sessions
  • Serial Experiments Lain=Layers
  • Boogiepop Phantom=Volumes
  • Gundam SeeD=Phases
  • G Gundam=Rounds
  • Texhnolyze=Rogues
  • Gundam Wing=Operations

It's just something that always bugs me.

I think they just do that to be difference or stand out a little bit from other animes.

Sessions really fit for Cowboy Bebop, since every ep title is named after a song, album or session.

In some cases at least, it's because the name fits the overall theme or feel of the series. For example, in Cowboy Bebop, the episodes are called sessions, which is term often used for some jazz titles or albums (remember, many of the episodes themselves are also named for famous jazz tunes). In the case of Serial Experiments Lain, the idea is to go through the "layers", until you get to the real truth. In other anime, it's no stretch to see that names like "operation" or "mission" refer to the nature of what's being done (e.g. military operations).
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

I'm gonna make a story where the chapters are going to be called "Gragpragulations"

Really, though, this honestly bugs you? ?_?

It helps fit the stories theme.

I personally like it when they do it in manga and anime. It makes the series see more whole and involved that way.

As people said, it's to fit the theme of the series and have something more interesting than plain old "episodes." Honestly can't imagine why it bothers you so much, nobody forces you to call a Bebop episode a "session" if you don't want to.

I think it's kinda cool, helps focus on the theme of the series as a whole. Princess Tutu does something similar--every episode is named after a famous piece from a ballet or opera and uses the music in that scene.

I think the reason why Pilot Candidate had Curriculums for episode titles is because it was set up in an academy setting.

They had 13 of them, if memory serves. Up to that point, I thought that was the shortest anime ever made...

Then FLCL blew away my perceptions!

Because it helps fit in with the story being told.

Examples:

Gankutsuou--each episode is a Chapter. This makes sense because the anime is based off of a novel.

Nightwalker--each episode is a "Night", which only really makes sense in the first four episodes, and it's a vampire anime.

Not all anime have different episode titles, though. Personally I like them.

Hellsing as "Orders" and Negima (the manga at least) has "periods". I think when they do that; it makes the series seem intresting.

Well, FLCL's an OAV, and ther had been shorter ones before it.

Thing is, 13-episode animes are the new trend. Based on what I've heard, the studios and networks in Japan can make as much money from a 13-episode series as they used to make from a 26-episode one, and since it obviously costs a lot less to make only half as many episodes, they just stick with 13.
