A question about SamuraiX/Rurouni Kenshin...

Postby Destroyer2000 » Wed Dec 24, 2003 2:44 pm

I've seen it on CN, and it looks good. I wanted to get Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, Samurai X: The Movie, and the TV series of RK. Is it really bloody? Like graphic disembowelment, and gory stuff?

I really didn't think a Christian would want to be seeing that. You can cut the blood off, can't you?

I haven't seen all the TV show (and what I saw was cut) so I can't vouch for that; the manga has been my most substantial contact with RK but I believe the TV show wasn't quite as violent. However, Samurai X (Remembrances) is supposed to be very gory. Anime Cafe has a couple of reviews here:

http://www.abcb.com/kenshin/rko_apga.htm

I have also heard it is a very sad story. You might be able to check to see if the DVDs offer a cut version, but I wouldn't count on it.

The CN version isn't bloody. I am getting Rurouni Kenshin: Wandering Samurai Box Set for Christmas, and it contains episodes 1-26/27 (I'm not sure, I've seen both from two different sources). Samurai X appears bloody, but is the regular Rurouni Kenshin?

The TV series Rurouni Kenshin is fine... it's not very gory, while at times it is implied it won't show the really bad stuff. /// the Samurai X OVA's however are a lot more violent, and sad and show it. Trust and Betrayal show back to Kenshin's sad childhood and his days as an assassin. Sam. X the movie is either somewhere during the tv series or right after it and isn't too bad gore-wise, but isn't that good story-wise. :) and Samurai X: Reflections takes place about 10 years after the tv series and isn't very violent... but it is so sad. :(
if you don't want gore the main ones to avoid are the Trust and Betrayal OVA's, they show the naughty Kenny.
it is a great tv series, i like the second saga best "Legends of Kyoto."

This is the second time I've noticed you using strange phrasing in reference to gore, redkorn...I hope you don't actually mean to promote it and you're misphrasing...

Thanks, all. I got a portable DVD player this morning, so I'm going to watch them on the way to my Uncle's house. I want to see Trust and Betrayal, and the others. Actually, I want to get everything Kenshin. It's awesome. I'm going to see if I can cut out the blood, as there is a content control thing...meh. I also received the first box set, episodes 1-27.

yes, i wonder about how you could cut it out of a dvd... i know about games, but i don't get that.
I also really want to get the Kenshin Manga, mainly to see what happens after the "legends of Kyoto" saga from the tv series... thats where i believe the tv series really gets off track of the authors true stroy.

yes, though there's lots of blood and gore in 'Samurai X', it's done in a way that does not glorify it. The blood is essential as it is a repeated symbolism in the anime, it's trying to bring out a message and if it was cut, then it'd be better if you don't watch it at all.

BTW, this is one of the most emotional and deep anime movie i've ever seen, if you don't mind the blood, go ahead. I've got a friend who missed out on it because she quitted after seeing the first few scenes, but on my urging (without knowing this was the movie that she told me about), she watched the whole thing and said she really really likes it. :)

I also have an Initial DVD Player, but I don't know the size. It seems to have quit working...my mom is taking it to work with her tomorrow and get it checked out.

So, Samurai X has lots of blood? I've heard it doesn't look very real, more like paint. And it's done to get the message about how bad the revolution and an assassin's life were?

RK and SX tend to be gory (CN edits alot of it out) but don't let this stop you, the story and characters are really good and well done. RK is a little more light and less gory, SX can be really bloody and it has a more serious tone and it can be more depressing too. RK and SX also look differently in the artwork. . .

I've always been curious about this. Why did they change the art style? I mean...Samurai X was supposed to be earlier, yet Kenshin looks older...

Samurai X doesn't look very good with the artwork. I've watching RK now, and it doesn't seem that gory. I've seen no guts spilled, just blood. And there's not much of it. Well, there is, but not graphic. I just saw where...

I need to see Samurai X...all I hope is that it's not like Blood: The Last Vampire. I HATE THAT SHOW!

Well, I did see a bit more blood in Aoshi: Someone so Beautiful It's Frightening.

Argh! I can't make the spoilers thingy work right, so I'll just say the name of the episode.

Yes, Kenshin1278, you're right, that's exactly why I did it. It was extraneous and frankly, irrelevant to the conversation. No one wants to know such details about the unfortunate fate of the cat.

Well, perhaps it's a tad redundant, but here's my two cents:

The TV show is great, only a little blood, and Kenshin trys to avoid fighting if possible.

The Manga is about the same as the TV show (Well, the 1st 2 volumes anyway. Highly recomended)

Samurai X Trust & Betrayal is bloody and sad, but it does explain Kenshin's past, and gives depth to the char. If you like the TV show, this is NOT more of the same. You could skip it, and not mis much, the stuff you need to know is in the TV show, but it does explain some of Kenshin's motivations and such.

I haven't seen Samurai X Reflections yet, it's still sitting on the shelf unwatched, so I can't comment on that yet.

The boringness of Samurai X would be in the eyes of the watcher, I suppose. I personally thought it was awesome. I mean, the blood content was pretty bad, but it wasn't as bad as some others I've seen. The blood in Samurai X stresses a certain point in the storyline. It's really only Trust and Betrayal that are that bad. The movie is kinda dull and pointless, but not that bad. Reflections is a definite tear jerker. :sniffle:

I thought the art change was okay. I like Kenshin better that way. I like his entire attitude better in X than in RK. It made it look a little more real in my opinion.

The choice has been made. There's no looking back. I won't let up, back up, give up, or shut up. My focus clear. My path is straight. My God, reliable. I'm a disciple of Christ.

I have watched some of what they've shown on tv plus some episodes that I bought and also have Samurai X: Reflections. (Get to borrow Trust and Betrayal tomorrow ^.^), and I also read volumes 1 + 2 of the manga. There are several elements I like about each.
In the tv show, there is lots of comic elements that make it fun to watch and keep it interesting without wrecking the emotional and action parts to it. (exe: Kenshin getting hit over the head by a hot-tempered Kaoru or knocking over several sumo wrestlers with two barrels of grain on a pole... all from clumsiness) The manga is very much like the tv series, except for the fact that its the original story and tends to veer minutely from the series, or should i say is veered minutely away from. :P anywho... then there's Samurai X, which, as I've said, I've only seen the last of. It is much more serious and contains quite a bit more blood/gore. The swordplay also is done quite a bit more realistically, though not so realistic as to make it boring. Yes, Reflections is pretty depressing though... well there's my rambling for the night lol... later dayz

From what I've seen of Samurai X, the blood doesn't look very real. Like a paint spray. Anyway, would it be better to rent them before I buy them?
