Postby bigsleepj » Mon Jan 23, 2006 12:07 am

Hmmmm. Interesting news. Some of you may have heard this, but this is the first time I've heard of this. Studio Ghibli, the company behind "Castle in the Sky", "Spirited Away" and "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" plan to release a movie in Japan later this year based on a book by Ursula K Leguin directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Mizayaki who directed the above mentioned movies (great to have a father whose the most successful animator in Japan). Here follows all the info from the Wikipedia, it includes the proposed US voice cast:

It will be based on the third book of the Earthsea series: The Farthest Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin. The official English title is "Tales of Earthsea".

That's a very interesting possibility. It will be interesting to see the adaption, not so much from a book to an anime but from a series to a single film.

Wow, that will be interesting. Earthsea was a pretty good Fantasy series, and so an anime of of it with such talent will be interesting.

I will be very interested in seeing this. The Earthsea Trilogy (it was a trilogy at the time, I think more books have been added to it since then) was my first real "fantasy" novel experience following LotR.

I've also enjoyed other LeGuin books, especially The Lathe of Heaven.

Should be good...

well the quoted text above says it is based on the 3rd book only (which seems an odd decision), so it won't be an adaptation of the entire series.

Hopefully this goes better for Le Guin than when she gave rights to the series to SciFi.

Hope it's better than that Sci-fi channel debacle.

I completely failed to read carefully enough to catch that. That changes my perception of the movie significantly, though I must confess I mostly view the series as a whole, barely remembering individual books.

I remember the 3rd book... but I don't know if this upcoming anime can really stand without the first as a starter. Will have to see...

ANYTHING will be better than that. I forced myself to watch that terribleness.

But an anime movie, I can see that. I think it would be cool...

AMEN. The sci-fi thing had promise, but IMO it was a disaster.
