I have a new anime love...

Postby Fantasy Dreamer » Wed Jan 18, 2006 10:04 am

Okay, so a while back, some of you may recall me asking about the Fruits Basket manga and anime. Well, I found a site (I won't mention it cause I'm not sure if it'd be breaking the rules or not) that allows you to download music video's and things. Well, not really download, but it loads the video and you watch it on the site. That same site has episodes from different anime's that people uploaded to their acounts for our viewing pleasure. And... Fruits Basket was among them. So over the past week (I've been sick, otherwise I would have been able to watch more within one day, thus finishing it earlier), I've been watching. I just finished the last episode! And...

I LOVE IT!! There are parts about it I don't like, a few characters I don't like, too, but that's what its like with all anime's. I"m sad that I watched them all! I'm tempted to re-watch a few episodes that I loved! I think I will... just not right now -.- .

Hey, am I the only one that thinks it kind of ended oddly? I mean, it seemed like there were a few loose ends that needed to be tied up. Does that get explained better in the manga? Seems like I heard somewhere that it does. I may buy the manga, but from what you've all told me in the past, the manga has just a few more bad qualaties to it. Does it? Or did I take that wrong?

Well, I love, love, LOVE Fruits Basket!! At least the anime. Don't know about the manga yet. But I'm going to more seriously try to take a look at one or two of the volumes!! And could someone list the volumes that the 'bad' things are in so I know ahead of time?

Welcome to the last two years of life. Furuba is my obsession. XD

As far as loose ends-- Furuba is a very typical example of what happens when an unfinished manga is adapted to an anime. The anime creators can turn out their anime much faster than the mangaka can work. Pretty soon, all of the manga has been made into an anime and there's nothing left to make episodes about-- but there must be an ending. SOOO, the creators of the show contrive some ending that's legitimate enough to keep people watching the show from committing suicide but ambiguous enough to leave room for another season when the manga is completed. *Prays. Desperately.*

The Furuba manga, indeed, ties up many of the loose ends. It's currently drawing near to completion in Japan. From the Rumors I've heard, it's going to be twenty something volumes. Currently, there are 12 released domestically by Tokyopop. The release schedule has spaced releases out four months apart. *sobs*

Anyways, as far as objectionable content goes: How do you feel about the word "d*mn?" I ask, because you will read it. . . a lot, especially in the first half of the series. Additionally, a lot of moderately offensive insulting names are used (b*tch, b*stard, ect). On the sexuality score, there are more homosexual jokes in the manga than the anime. They are played up for humor, but they're more blatant in the manga than the anime. There are a few innuendos to that affect. Most of the characters who are questionably gay turn out not to be gay, but there is still a character or two who has a questionable sexual preference.

Nudity wise, Takaya seems to make an effort at skirting indecency by using her convenient "poof" un-transformation clouds (despite the fact that the very premise of the show would lend itself to nudity), but there three instances in which these clouds do not obscure some undetail, barbie doll-esque nudity. Most notably, this occurs when Rin Sohma (who isn't introduced in the anime) untranforms the first time. Even this, the most blatant sexuality thus far, isn't detailed by any stretch of the imagination.

Religion wise, there is one character who makes a few statements that are pretty blasphemous in nature. I can't be any more descript than that without spoiling something. Luckily, this character is one who everybody hates and who is pretty crazy to begin with.

As a minor heads up, I hear rumors that there will be some sort of "sleeping around" that occurs before the end of the series. Given Takaya's handling of nudity and the like, I imagine such an encounter will be implied rather than shown, but I can't promise you that. Additionally, I can't even guarantee it's true, but I had it from a pretty reliable source.

I hope that helps.

One last thought I'd like to throw out-- If you like the show so much, I strongly encourage you to buy the show. What these people have done, uploading the show, is really illegal. Downloading licensed anime is illegal. One of Fruits Baskets awesome points is that all 26 episodes are available on 4 DVDs, which is incredible and an awesome value. Furthermore, the complete set of four DVDs, which comes in an adorable art box, can be purchased for $50 at Best Buy. It doesn't get better than that.

Anime fans of the world-- let your dollars speak of your fandom!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Yeah, I'd like to buy the DVDs, but I don't have the cash! Ah! I'm saving for two different things, plus trying to keep a little for spending purposes, and possibly to buy some fast food or eat out! Ack! I work, three nights a week and on the weekends, both part time jobs. Then I have school to finish! Summer will be so much easier for work. And I have piano to practice ack!

But my point is, I don't have the money for that. Boo, hoo. If I did, I'd buy some over anime DVDs.

Anyway, thanks for the info. There seems like a whole lot more things 'not to love' in the manga than in the anime. hmm... I'll see. Ayame disturbes me beyond all belief. I don't like him. Nor whats-his-face who dresses like a girl. I can't remember his name, he was only in one episode! >.< It doesn't matter, i don't like him either.

actually..toward the latter part of the series..Takaya brings in more nudity.... I would put this in spoilers but I don't think it is much of a spoiler. Those volumes have yet to be released however...thought I would warn you guys about that content..i won't say why...but yeah... there is also..
a "questionable" scene later as well...
OTHER than those points..FB is A GREAT SERIES.

hmm, yes. but there always seems to be that "other than this its good" with anime and manga isn't there? Isnt' that awful? I'd like for once to be able to watch something without having to worry about nudity, or language, or some other bad content. Think that day will ever come?

But the anime had questionable content. It was one of those "other than..." things as well. But I really like it. And I said before, there are things I love about it, but then there are others I could defenatly do without.
