I don't think the concept of "silent protagonist" transfers into non-game forms very well... In fact, that was my biggest annoyance with the Chrono games... The idea that creating a blank character will allow the player to project themself onto it? It's just rediculous... I connect much better with, say, Locke than I do with Crono... Also, the character I connected most with in all movies and games combined was Joel on Eternal Sunshine... His character was very very specific. Blank main characters is just a sign of bad writing, in my opinion... The rest of teh main characters made up for that, though...
Basically, the story would have to be rewritten in some major ways to work outside of games, unless you only used the non-Crono parts to tell the story... Sorta like Muslim movies on Mohammed... They can't actually depict mohammed, so they depict the events around him... Something closer to Crono than those monsters running the Fair, though...
BTW, if the dialogue could be overhauled, and the 40 something characters reduced to like 8, and a more definate part for Serge was made, then Cross would make a great anime...
