Living alone also means 1) the rent and bills are paid on time and if they aren't, you have no one else to blame but yourself 2) your food doesn't disappear out of the fridge 3) they don't break your stuff by using it without your permission 4) you can come in whenever you want 5) when it's time to rest, you can go to bed and 5a) you can get up whenever you're ready.

It may be more expensive, and sometimes it may be a little more boring, but I couldn't imagine living with a roommate. (Note: having a roommate is not the same as being married, duh. :) There's difference in commitment and relationship levels, just to name a few. This doesn't apply to that.)

I did the roommate thing in college, and I suppose I'm glad for the experience... but I'd never want to do it again. Not unless I really really really liked being around that person all the time.

If you share facilities (eg. lounge, kitchen, bathroom etc) there's no reason why sharing a room is socially advantageous tbh. It's just a pain in the butt...

Double rooms really only serve two purposes here in manchester uni's accomodation - couples, and people who like lots of space.

If I had my own seperate flat, that would be crazy. There'd be no-one to talk to...

First of all, it's only $500 for a single room? What a deal! I pay around $1700 for a double right now, and it will be even more next year if I get a single (which I want).

I prefer having my own room, but there is a way to have the social interaction, help, and facilities with the benefits of your own room: suites! :thumb:

That is what I am trying to get for next year. The room is a little smaller, but you it's the best of both worlds.

Here are my problems with a roommate/s:
1.Laziness-my roommate stays up and wakes up a lot later than I do, so most nights I have to struggle to sleep with his stupid desk light shining in my face. Good thing I like sleeping with the covers over my head. :eyeroll: Then when I get up, I have to tip-toe around the room and keep the lights off. It is really annoying. So, I think single rooms are better for morning people.

2.Noise-This hasn't been a problem for me (at least not between my roommate and I), but I can see how it could be an issue. If you go to bed early, a noisy roommate could disturb you; and if you sleep in, you might be disturbed by your roommate/s who don't have the luxury of sleeping in. On a related note, I usually read/study with headphones on, so even if my roommate was making noise, it wouldn't disrupt my learning.

3.Space-Space runs out quickly as the number of people increases. Why not have it all? And having a disorganized roommate (which I do) can be annoying, especially when you have to step over their clothes. Earlier in the year, my roommate would hang his jacket on the door, and I would always brush it and knock it over (unintentionally). Then I would have to put it back, wasting my time and testing my patience.

4.Security-What if your roomoate leaves the door unlocked, and someone steals your laptop? I always remember to lock the door when I leave and when I sleep at night, but I can't be sure that my roomate does the same. If you are good about remembering this sort of thing, then having a roommate could be a liability.

Also, my roommate is studying Architecture, and I am studying Philosophy, so he can't really help me with my work. The only other advantage I can see is that if you forget/need something, you might be able to borrow it from your roommate, although this problem disappears if you live in a suite. ;)

when I grow up I'd really take either, but I'm shy and like to be alone and in the quiet, so I'd probably take #1.

I'd like to stay in an apartment with someone there who shairs my interests. That would be great.

Yeah...having a roommate in the same room is not fun, especially if you've always had your own room.

OK.

I started out sharing a room with my brother. Eventually we changed that and got our own rooms. Then I went to college. My first semester was 4 guys in a dorm room that's smaller than my garage now. You could fit two of those rooms in my current garage. One of my room mates was selling over 1g of grass/wk. That wasn't cool. The next semester I got a room the same size, but one room mate. He was a neat freak. You have no idea what that phrase can mean until you meet this dude. He would actually make my bed if I forgot to (which I ALWAYS did when I found this fact out). He ironed his sheets and underwear, shaved his chest and vacummed twice a week. He insisted that, when one took one's shoes off, they must be lined up against the wall with the laces tucked in. On time I came home after a 12 hour doom tourney in the comp lab. It was well after 3:00 AM and I was wiped. I barely got my shoes off before I had fallen asleep. Evidently he woke up when I came in though. After a few minutes, he climbed out of be (the bunk above me) and rearranged the shoes because he COULDN'T SLEEP! He also made a tape of me snoring, and used it to create a rather amusing answering machine message.

My next roommate was my brother - who went to the same college I did. That lasted a full year with no real problems. My next room mate was a guy as wacky as me, but a computer moron. I spent more time fixing my computer after he played games than I did doing homework. Eventuallly, I had my own apartment. That was just awesome. Some of my best memories are of those days.

Now I have a full time room mate that is rather fun. I'll leave out most of the details of that situation, though.

I love my roommie, I wouldn't trade her for the world. I like to have someone to chat with and have jokes with. I don't like being alone all the time.
Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives? Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies, or be who we are. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away.

i once lived with my sister in the same room. now, i am NOT a girl. and it just to happens living with your sister is something that i will never, EVER do again. never again will i ever have to play my computer in silence!

fortunately, i moved out into my own room, and hence live in one right now. in fact, my mother sleeps in the living room because there isn't enough space. i feel sorry for her... at least until my cousin moves out permanently, she's hogging the space in my house!

so i wouldn't mind living with other people, even if they are weird and not suited to my style. afterall, it's all experience, whether good or not. and life is continuous cycle of learning after all, usually from other people's ideas.
