Understanding the FMA's Homunculi's powers

Postby rocklobster » Mon Nov 14, 2005 11:36 am

Can someone help me out here? I've noticed that most of the homunculi's abilities tie into their representations.
Lust=Ensnaring beauty and fingernails are a part of that.
Gluttony=insatiable appetite makes sense to me. If I were creating someone named Gluttony he'd be like this too.
Sloth=turns into water? How does this fit in? It seems more like she should make you sleepy, since sloth means laziness.
Greed=impenetrable body? Is it because you hoard things when you're greedy and don't want to share?
Wrath=another one that makes sense.
Envy=shape-shifting? I don't know about this one.
I'm not listing Pride since I don't know what he/she does.

In chemistry, we learned that all molecules are held together by invisible bonds called Intermolecular Attractions. The stronger the IAs, the more sold the object. Liquid is liquid since its IAs are weaker than those in a solid, so by making his IA's "lazy" they are weakened and he turns into a liquid...

Er...I'm overthinking this, aren't I? ^^;;

Envy's powers make sense...at least to me. To be so envious of others that you steal their identity...yeah.

major spoilers
the reason why Greed is impenitrable because he makes the carbon molecules more dense, as in the molecules are closer together. Ed beats him by making those carbon molecules less dense, and then able to kill him
now here is the MAJOR spoiler... I mean if you did NOT finish the series.... don't read this.... trust me...... It is a MAJOR spoiler
Pride is the Fuhrer (one with the eyepatch). His powers.... ehh Not too sure, he's good at fighting though.
Regarding Pride's power...
Underneath the eyepatch, his tatoo of ouroboros is on his eye instead of his pupil and iris. With it, I believe he can see the future...or at least possible future outcomes. Something of that sort.
While Gluttony's power is very obviously linked to his representation, I don't think all of them need be. This works on occasion (Envy, for example) but doesn't function well when applied to all Homunculi (Greed).

Now regarding Pride:
In the manga, this is explained a bit more. From what I remember, it allows him to fight at a much faster speed than humans are normally able, as his perceptions have significantly improved. Though it doesn't seem dangerous, it worked pretty well against Greed.
