To go somewhat in concurrence with zipo_master, I would say that honestly, it really isn't entirely fair to judge a series, at least on the grounds of viewing just handful of episodes. Personally, I try not to make any kind of over-arcing judgments until I've seen the whole thing unless it's just too burdensome to get through it all. Thus, in most cases I at least wait till after say disc 2. This way you've gotten past disc 1, which may or may not be slow at first due to how characters and their development is introduced, and usually the plot will have gotten into a somewhat better swing by disc 2. As a side note, though, I 'd say with Naruto you'd need to give it at least a 6-8 episode trial run due to the fact that the thing is so dang huge! :-p But to get back on the subject of this thread, for me the following shows were kinda confusing regarding why there was so much hype:
Rurouni Kenshin tv series (saw the first six discs; really good stuff for sure! And maybe it's just me, but while the series was good, still found it to be a far cry from the OVAs)
Dragon Ball and it various incarnations (I've seen most of Z, some of the original, though not a ton of GT; definitely good, high caliber action..... and that's sorta it O.o; to me, it's the Power Rangers of anime: new bad guy= must save Earth, new bad guy= get stronger, save Earth again, etc.; action for action's sake is something I have a hard time with if that's..... all there is O.o)
Hamtaro (I have a special place in my heart for cute/chibi/hilarious type stuff, but this just weirds me out O.o
Trigun (I keep hearing about how Vash is such an amazing character and other things regarding the show in terms of depth/messages; that's not to say everything has to have some life altering message, but then everything I've seen of this show seems to be the "opposite" of or kinda lacking in what I've been told makes it so good, besides comedy that is :-p)
Sailor Moon (Kind of the Power Rangers syndrome as mentioned regarding Dragon Ball/Z/GT, though since I've seen a decent amount of episodes, I do see good for nice character development which is a plus :-))
DNAngel (though it stars one of my fave English VAs Vic Mignogna, who's a Christian too, the show seemed to be confused about itself, whether it wanted to be more of a dark, mysterious type or more comedic/coming of age/quirky)
Can't think of any others right now, but I'll add them in another post if I do
:-p
