Kiki's Delivery Service -- 2006 remake?

Postby TheMelodyMaker » Wed Oct 26, 2005 7:42 pm

My parents and I were watching Kiki's Delivery Service tonight during/after supper, and Mom was looking up on the 'Net to who did which voices -- and she said she saw something about a 2006 remake! Out of curiosity, does anyone else know anything about this? :)

It's a live-action adaptation of the movie.

New Kiki's Delivery Service from Disney

I remember making a thread about this news back in Feb of this year, but I can't find the thread. I started to think they forgot about it and wasn't going to be made at all.

I really don't see a need to remake this movie. The way it is now is by no means out dated, and I can see a live action version beeing really horrible. That's half the magic of anime, you can do things that would look really stupid if you tried it live action.

The live action movie.... Err..... I agree wit CDL, a live action version wouldn't really have the same impact the anime did. The uniqueness would be loss in a sense.

Sadly, I envision it turning out like the live action "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch." They used an animatronic cat for that show, I can just imagine what they would do with Jiji. Of course Computer Graphics are pretty good now. Depends on what type of budget they give it.

Disney already drastically altered Jiji for the anime and, though it is painful for a purist like me to admit, I do prefer the Phil Hartman Jiji to the original Japanese.

Of course as long as it's not like the Sailor Moon Live Action Luna...

RU Serious?! That would be bad! I mean, getting Miyazaki out there more is good, but the whole magic of the story would be gone! They couldn't do it as well even with good special fx and I agree that it would turn out like Sabrina the teenage witch... oh thats not cool ><

I would have to agree with everyone that a live action remake would be a bad idea, especially since Phil Hartman was such a tremendous part of the success for the dubbed version.Of course remakes aren't always as successful as the originals.

*stabs The Live Action Kiki's Deliver Service with a broom, then hides broom when law abiding board members walk by.*

Needless to say, Osaka is not impressed by this idea. I mean, in animation, you CAN crash a massive blimp into a clock tower, have cat deliver jokes, and have a young boy fall from massive heights until Kiki dives after him on her broom and save him. In animation, that works. But in Live action, there's a serious chance that it will be laughable. Unless the film gets a collosal budget (which it probably won't), it would probably be a failure of mass proportion.

Die! Live action movie! Die!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I think the hope lies in the success of the Harry Potter films and that a live action Kiki will be able to cash in on some of that.

Oh goodness. I loved Kiki's Delivery Service, but this may change that. I just hope that it will bomb and they will not attempt to do the rest of Miyazaki's movies in live action...

I'm a little surprised by the panning of a movie not even made yet. Sure, Disney's doing it and Disney's reputation with live action is not so good anymore, but can we at least let them try?

I definitely don't see why like or dislike of the anime should drive like or dislike of the movie and vice versa.

Love love LOOOOVE that movie! But a live-action movie would NOT be good, IMO. Don't mess with a good thing. I just don't think it's gonna have the same spark. Defiently not. Bad Disney! No Kiki for you!

Just as a side note, when something moves from an anime to a live action production, it is a step up in Japan. The awful live action You're Under Arrest was considered a improvement over the anime version.

I strongly doubt anyone put a gun to Miyazaki's head.

Well, live action movies from anime haven't exactly... taken off here. I think because it's going to be a Disney, American-made movie, that's already setting off a few alarms. It just kinda leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It's just so good already, a live movie just wouldn't be the same.

But it is extra money for Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. So unless Disney truly botches it, I doubt they'll complain. Besides they'd have to get permission from Ghibli, so I presume it's been greenlighted in Japan if the production is guaranteed.

Not only that... I just think that remaking a miyazaki movie, even if it is *remaking from the book* isn't a good idea at all. It's just a bad precedent. A really bad precedent.

Note: I doubt they got permission from Ghibli - they don't need to, as it's from a book, not from the movie.

The Book was a collection of short stories. If they remake it from that, probably no contact with Ghibli would be needed. But if they took the unified story from the movie, then I suspect it would be with Ghibli that they would go to.

However, given how close Ghibli and Disney are, I'd be really suprised to see them not involved in the deal.

Ack, this was a Japanese film. If there should be a live-action version, it also should be a Japanese movie.

Considering the characters were all European, it would make as much sense if not more for it to be American as Japanese...

I think that's good thing. If they just try to copy the anime, it will most likely flop. A copy's never as good as the original. But if they take their own interpretation from the original stories, we could end up with a charming story that stands well on its own.

Japanese live action has a bad tendency to be doubtful quality when it comes to sfx
