Heheh, yeah, there's ALOT that goes on in such a short anime. I was watching my DVD with the director's commentary and alot of the things you thought had some sort of inside meaning really had NO meaning whatsoever.

I believe there were two things edited between the sub and dub, and they were very, very small. Originally, there wasn't supposed to be any innuendo, but someone on the staff put a little bit in, giving FLCL that image. It's odd and spontaneous and meant to make people go 'What the...?' Just Gainax blowing off steam was all that was. But it was pretty steam.

Know what movie trailer I saw and thought to myself "wow, I just saw a ton of FLCL references in that 30 seconds..." ? CHICKEN LITTLE

Could be coincidental, but then again, it IS Disney; who has been know to rip off anime and make it their own.

Any thoughts?

Hmm... I will have to watch the trailer again. I didn't notice anything when I saw it a while back.

Haruko is looking for Atomsk, and she needs someone with a lot of "N.O." (ability to pull things through a portal in your head).

Natota has a lot. Robots come out. They fight. Naota starts to "grow up".

Seriously, that's all there is to it. All of the other stuff is just weird random inside-jokes thrown around. FLCL at it's most basic point is just about a boy growing up,things coming out of his head, and covering the actual simplicity is just random pointless things.

In the manga there's a whole flashback where Noata's recalling being buried alive
by Haruko and Mamimi and then it goes back to the present where he's actually
being buried alive.

FLCL dosen't focus much on plot and if you try to understand what's going on you end up like this. :bang: Really, you should just enjoy the random humor (if you like that sort of thing). I love random things, chickenduckmobywoo. The show makes me laugh and I loved the music so much I went out and bought the soundtracks. :hits_self

I watched the first episode and i was hooked. Very my style of anime and humor. Plus the animation and action is top notch. And the bext part is you dont have to watch every episode to understand it.

Supposedly, a lot of the random sequences were Gainax's attempt to satire other anime or manga and references to an upcoming anime/manga convention. The scene where the blong, uniformed agent shoots a large caliber cannon at Kanti is straight off the convention poster.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi is like this all over. The dubbed version of that actually has pop-ups that explain all of the wierdness. Because if you hadn't seen, like, every anime ever made you'd be hopeless. Of course, if you have seen every enime made you are equally hopeless.;)

I saw the first episode of Fooly Cooly and was left with the feeling of "What in all the worlds was that?" I think it's rather stupid...I didn't get the part where the manga was merged with the anime, that was extremely confusing, but I hate it anyway so I guess it doesn't matter. It's got quite a few sexual innuendoes, nothing barf-worthy, but I don't think I recommend it...

Pop-ups in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi?
I don't recall any pop-ups when they aired it on AU.

You can't possibly begin to understand FLCL after seeing only 1 episode. You really have to watch all 6. That said, it's not for everyone.

If you buy the DVD, there is a special mode you can enable. It's like an extra set of subtitles, except they look like pop-up cartoon text balloons that describe various aspects of Japanese culture or allusions to other anime/manga.

I actually saw the series a while back before it was aired on adult swim. It made me raise a few eyebrows, but nothing like banging my head againist the wall. The series takes alot of time to understand(much like alot of other Gainax producted shows, however FLCL was also co-produced with the help of production IG). You just have to be extreme open-minded when watching the series. In all honest, epsoide 6 is actually the best because it is the most "normal" of the series. My favorite epsiode was the one were the theme was cats. That one was by far the funniest. I also liked the 5th one when Naota and his grandpa are sitting in the living room watch television and a guy on the tv says, "Brother, what are all these pigeons doing here?", and all these pigeons starting flying out of the television. I laughed till my sides were hurting.

Originally, there wasn't supposed to be so much innuendo. I love the art and the characters. That's what got me in. I also love anime that you have to really think to understand what's going on. I know it's odd. I like it. I'm sorry! :bang:

My favorite was the cat episode as well. 'Kitty kitty... meow!'

The glomping was actually funny. That's the only thing I remember actually being funny, though...but I only saw the first episode.
