yes that is true...don't get me wrong He is the one who gives us this great joy, and to know Him is the greatest blessing that is for sure, but we hold ourselfs from knowing Him sometimes by acting like nothing is wrong, but yes you do have a point there about teh sin, we should be contrite, and that is a definate...it was just something i saw...but what i love about the WOrd fo God is it is living and active...and will hit the person where they need it...pearcing to the soul and deeper....what a sword...anticipating it's target
I used to "Follow" Him because i had to....now i would give everything to follow Him.

Sorry I'm late (just got back from a week of church camp). I shall commit to catching up right away.

By the way, how important do you all consider memorizing the exact references to verses? I know tons of verses (not trying to be haughty here) but don't have a clue as to their references. What do you think?

I would say its fairly important... afterall, what if you are trying to witness or help a troubled Christian and you bring a verse up but don't know where its from. What if that person asked where exactly in the Bible it is?

While it is good that you have learned a whole stack of verses, can I encourage you to also remember the reference? That way not only will you be able to go back to that verse quickly to refresh your memory, but you will also be prepared if you are asked a question like the one above.

Hey guys! Well... its Tuesday again for me (flies round quick doesn't it?). I'll be changing the verse when I get back from uni though, so in about 4 or so hours. Until then, keep on practising James 4:7-8!

Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts you double minded

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to announce the new verse.

1 Peter 5:5-6
Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
"God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble."
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

This is a bit long... sorry about that. But I was thinking of making it verses 5-7, so count yourself blessed :P tehe
If this one causes some problems we might leave it up for 2 weeks, just to give ourselves extra time to learn it.
Btw... sorry how 4 hours turned into 12 or so... <.<;;

Edit: Just because it says 'young men' doesn't mean it doesn't apply to us women as well! Everyone needs humility, myself most of all. Strewth I need it bad...
Edit x2: I have edited the first post so that it also has James 4:7-8 :thumb: God bless you guys!

These verses remind me of how the world is kind of upside-down when compared to actual, spiritual, reality. The world says, "You have to step on people to get ahead," or that the strongest, most talented or most popular are the people who are really on top. However, the Holy Spirit tells us "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." That blows me away! It reminds me of these verses too!

29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
Matthew 19:29-30

Whenever I read scripture, I always am reminded of things, it seems.

Very true! It also says: (Isaiah 57:15)
For this is what the high and lofty One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
"I live in a high and holy place,
but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.

Anyway, shall we get around to memorising this long thing?

1 Peter 5:5-6
Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because
'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble'.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.

o.o  Me thinks I will need to work hard on this one...

Close enough, I think.

Hmm... kind of a paraphrase. I need to work on it more.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand that He may lift you up in due time... straightforward and profound, but at the same time so deep... and always practical. God's word is amazing.

It is indeed. Actually, I think that the concept of humility isn't very well understood in the church today... we often tend to view it as being a doormat or quiet and not confronting. Can I challenge you guys, as you are memorising this verse, to think about what you understand humility to be, and then compare that with different examples of Biblical humility? :P I think it will make for an interesting discussion.

Anyway, 1 Peter 5:5-6

Hmm... I've been reading through 1 Samuel lately about David. I suppose he might be a good example of true humility. He was humble and submissive to God, a man after God's own heart, but was able to take on bears, lions, giants and to lead armies into victory. He was humble and yet he seemed to be one of those extreme personalities that you either loved as your own soul (Johnathan) or had contempt for (Saul). David's situation with Saul and Johnathan further showed his humility. He would not go against God's annointed, even though Saul was going after his life. He was a very incredible man. Yeah, he did mess things up a lot, but his humility showed out even then with how he responded to rebuke and how quickly he realized his mistakes and repented from them.

I suppose true humility is before God, to strive to make your will conformed to His, to be sensitive to His leading and when you make a mistake, you repent and turn away from your sins with all your heart. Jesus demonstrated true humility in the garden of Gethsemane.

Hey everyone!

Wah! I've really lagged behind this week, sorry. I've been a bit swamped with study  . All right, so 1 Peter 5:5-6 it is.

I think its awesome that there's such discussion going on about this verse. :)
I agree with you, Syreth, and I think the point you made about how in humility David responded with repentence to rebuke when he messed up is a good one. If I'm correct, perhaps I can assume that part of humility is the ability to take rebuke/criticism and do the right thing with it: repent, accept God's forgiveness, learn the lesson and move on?

Another point I think the verse makes is when it says "...clothe yourselves with humility towards one another..." Man, I can remember the times when I've caught myself being judgemental towards others. Perhaps in clothing ourselves in humility we are cleansed from a critical spirit because we get to the place where we realise we're all in the same boat, and its only by God's amazing grace and love that we're saved, not by anything we've done, are doing, haven't done or will do.

What do you think?

Good idea, and I agree with you. I've noticed in Churches here in NZ that we have a lot of respect for amazing teachers, musicians, leaders, pastors... etc., but at times can forget just how crucial and important are those who work quietly, getting no praise or recognition. Those people who do things even like cleaning the Church, smiling at people as they come in, striking up conversations with people who look lonely, praying quietly.... and the many other things people do.... those people are so important. They move in humility, and although they aren't always recognised we'd sure notice if they stopped doing thier work. :) .

Maybe that's going off on a bit of a tangent. I hope you all don't mind. :)

I would tend to agree with you and Syreth. Also, I think humility is realising that we are nothing without God... and I mean -nothing-. By recognising that we are nothing and that God is all, we are humbled and can be used by God extremely effectively as our own ego and pride doesn't get in the way.

Btw... just a funny little aside:
Numbers 12:3
(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)

[10 points to who can guess who wrote Numbers ;) ]

I've recognised a similar trend in Aussie. There seems to be a view that if you aren't a pastor, or (esp) singing/playing in the worship team then you aren't being used by God completely. But if you think about it, isn't it a tougher and even more important job that Godly parents have? Raise a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it...

Meep! I completely forgot  Sorry guys
This time we are going to learn an entire psalm... but in parts, so it will take place over a few weeks ;) The psalm itself isn't too long (only 6 verses)

New verse:
Psalm 1:1
Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers

:thumb: God bless you guys!

Btw, on the 26th (i.e. in 2 days [for me anyway ;) ]) we will have been in action for a month! Praise God!

How's the memorising coming along maties?

Psalm 1:1
Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers

Btw, the next verse (which shall be put up in two days, God willing) is just the following verse [i.e. Ps 1:2]. When that is put up, feel free to type up not only verse 2, but also verse 1 so that it will flow naturally when it comes to saying the entire of Psalm 1 :thumb:

At my church, we've been doing a sermon series on the Psalms, and just last Sunday my pastor did an entire sermon on that psalm. It was cool, and really reinforced my memorization.

Psalm 1:1-2
Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

Hey guys! Since last week's one was so short, I've decided to put the next part of the verse up.

Psalm 1:1-3
Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

Edit: Btw, I have updated the first post in this thread to include the verses we have learned in the last 2 weeks

Well, almost.

[i]Two vast and trunk-less legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, half sunk, a shattered visage lies. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away. On the pedestal these words are inscribed:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€
