Osamu Tezuka's Metrapolis?

I think I spelled that right...

I saw this title at the video store. Is there anything to watch our for? Then is it a good movie?

The animation itself is very good in my opinion and it can be interesting if you like to think about the meaning of various aspects of movies. The story moved a bit too slow for me. However I saw this when it first went to video (read: many years ago) so I may feel different about it now if I saw it. Check out the CAA review for this movie. It explains details of the movie better than I can.

I really enjoyed Metropolis, and I would say it was a good movie. As far as I remember, there was nothing really offensive in it at all.

Wasn't there already a topic about this?

If you are expecting the Fritz Lang's story, this is not the movie to get. If you are expecting Osamu Tezuka's original story, this movie is loosely based on the manga.

Despite those misconceptions, the movie is pretty good. I'm pretty picky with watching anime and I found this one clean and refreshing. Sad though... if you don't get the meaning of the story. And the movie is serious.

People complain about the religious symbols in this movie. Compared how anime and religion goes, this one is pretty tame in my view. Watch the movie in subtitles to see the correct translations. ^^

I think there is a thread for this. I considered it a good movie. Just don't watch it if you want to see a movie with a real cheerful ending.

I watched it a long while back and from what I remember, the DVD was dub only :/ Downloaded it raw and was bored v_v Watched it in the dub when I rented it and it was alright... I've seen better. Worth a rent I guess IMO, but since many quite enjoy this flick, they're opiniosn will be a lot more optimistic than mine^^

Indeed they did. I saw it then, and was absolutely blown away. The movie was brilliant.

Well, I dismantled Zane's negative comments on religious symbolism in the Reviews thread, and he agreed that my proposals were more likely in tune with the intent of the directors, but later said the same thing again and never said whether he still held to the old or new interpretations of the scenes in question. What's left is the more legit Metropolis = Babylon (compare Duke Red's opening speech and the movie in general with Isaiah 14, the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11) metaphor.

I saw it kind of a long time ago but i thought it was pretty good. The only objectionable thing i can think of is like 1 cuss word or so. Now that i think back the animation was realy good and it had a lot of action but also still emotional scenes. Definately worth a see!

What? I don't remember that? I'll have to check that out....

Great movie btw. Shao

I looked through what I said again Ghost, and I think that my intention in what was written (mind you it was a long time ago), was that I agreed with your point of view regarding Tima and the dove as a symbol of innocence (which from memory also fly away just before the revolution begins), and hence the theme of the movie (innocence lost and regained, as you said).

But, as an English student I can not resist to strech the analysis abit further; hence there are many ways to read/watch something and interepret them differently. Your interpretation is probably closer to what the directors had in mind (as I previously said), but looking at the movie from a Christian 'lens' or 'framework' if you like, I think the notion of Tima being a a robotic messiah has some ground for argument. (The cross behind the throne being a major one in conjunction with the others; the dove symbol etc).

As you stated the Ziggarot = the tower of babel metaphor is undeniable.
I accept both interpretations; yours being the original intention of the directors, while mine being a more critical, (if I may say so, which by no means implies superiority of course), and streching the film to fit into a Christian framework, which I believe the film does lend itself to. And so may be offencive to some Christians who might interpret it the way I did, which is after all what the religious material section in the Review page is there for.

Either way though brother, a great movie ;)
(good seeing you again btw)

Well, then good for me, because a cross is nothing more than two intersecting lines that people dwell more upon than Christ Himself (most of the time anyway) and the ressurection. :thumb:

That was irrelevant to the topic at hand, not to mention somewhat offensive to people who remember what Christ endured for our salvation.

I personaly didn't like this one at all but I did have some awesome background art. I guess I'm just not really a fan of Tezuka's work. I do want to check out BlackJack though.

I bought it on Ebay a few weeks ago, and I love it! The animation is great and the movie has a great message...always make sure you run a debugger on your android before activating it.
