Why do rabid otakus pick bad titles to defend?

I just saw Ninja Scroll. Why do the rabid otakus have to keep picking trash like Ninja Scroll , FLCL and to some extent Akira to defend? Why can't they pick titles that aren't as perverted or gory? I'm sorry if this causes a thread war, but I cannot join otakus in defending titles like these.

Because the reason why I defend some Black Metal bands that may or have satanic roots. Cause I enjoy it. They enjoy such titles therefore when questioned have the right to defend thier opinions. Same with some series you like. One may consider that "trash" therefore question and bash you're choice in which you have the right to defend.

There are some people however that get out of hand in defending what they like to the point of bieng pointless and senseless...for example "You're mom!" or "Well...you suck"

The anime that got me into anime was pokemon, but i dont watch that anymore. Doesn't mean i dont have fond memories of it though no matter how bad it is. Perhaps though, the first anime i bought defined what i love. Maybe it's the same for you Alice?

The show that got me into watching anime was Yu Yu Hakusho, which I don't watch anymore. But before that I watched Flying House and Superbook when I was a kid, and Pokemon when I was a teen. I didn't really know they were anime, though. ^__^

Mine was Speed Racer and G-Force but I never knew that was anime...cause I was little. The first anime that I knew was anime that got me hooked was DBZ and Sailor Moon. Then I got even mre hooked by Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, and Outlaw Star. And what led me to buying DVD's was Rurouni Kenshin.

And most of these were through Cartoon Network.

I agree with ya there about Ninja Scroll but I fail to see how Champloo's sexual content can even be compared to that.

I enjoyed the detail-work in Ninja Scroll animation, but I did find it to have too much skin exposure and excess gore. But those yellowjackets sure seemed nastier than Naraku's in Inuyasha.

I bailed out of Samurai Champloo once we hit the episode which tried to portray samurai as mostly homosexuals and pederasts. (AAnnnk! Delete!)

I realy think that, like 'formative music' that you discover when you are impressionable to it, many people discovered sereis 'X' or 'Y' or 'Z' during a formative phase in their life - and this can be at any time. It;'s the time when you go from having seen about 4 anime in your life to going - 'hey there's a whole WORLD of this out there' and its the 6th - 12th series that you ever see while in that enthusiastic ramp-up pohase that you remember fondly. It then gets hard to admit that later shows can actually trump your personal 'gateway' classics.
