Jazz in Anime

Are there any shows besides Cowboy Bebop that have any jazz music as a background or theme? Being an avid listener of Jazz (both contemporary and classic) I find myself wondering if there are other shows out there that feature such music.

Hellsing has a sort of jazzy sound to it.

mechana2015: Does that answer your question?

K. Ayato: Perfectly.

Trigun has a bad guy who plays the sax. Jazz isn't very prominent in anime, but Cowboy Bebop is cool.

Yeah, I kind of figured that. I fell in love with the music in Cowboy Bebop and I have heard the intro of Gad Guard as well. It's too bad that besides the shows mentioned here, there isn't a lot of music in that genre.

Metropolis has some great jazz music. The anime, not the original 1927 live-action movie. Recommended.

Aww. Poor Midvalley doesn't even get his name mentioned. You refer to Midvalley the Hornfreak. In the anime, he uses his saxophone to somehow cause pain with soundwaves, I think. It's kind of not explained well. @.@;; He only plays one song anyway, as far as I can tell. Someone was too lazy to write him another. He also has some kind of gun in it.
In the manga, Midvalley can use the soundwaves to a) neutralize all other soundwaves and make an area perfectly silent and the cooler one, b) make people's brains explode. Muhahaha. XD;;; Think Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist.
Think happy thoughts.

Master of Mosquiton has a big-band jazzy intro, but that's about it.

I was never that crazy about Midvalley. He seemed out of place, even in the extreme weirdness that is Trigun. Or maybe I just have something against sax players. ;P (I was a brass player in high school band.)

I'll have to agree with W4J. I don't like the movie Metropolis at all, but the music is pretty nice.

Sax players are awesome! In fact, I've played the saxophone since the 4th grade and yet I still see the brass picking on the instrument... typical.

I haven't seen Metropolis, but I have heard that there is a Ray Charles number in it. Though I might have to pick up the soundtrack or might as well invest some time in seeing the movie (if Warrior 4 Jesus says it's good). :)

Sorry W4J. I think I was just disillusioned because the story wasn't quite what I was expecting.

And I actually like Sax players, Aeolus. One of my best high school friends played sax and he was awesome. Somehow, sax seems to transcend the brass/woodwind rift. It's like a section all unto itself.

And I am so totally off subject here. I really can't think of any anime that focuses on jazz as a part of its soundtrack.

Gungrave is a little known anime that is mostly all jazz. Pick up that soundtrack if you get a chance! I bought it a while back and love it!
But then again, it is my personal opinion so...

GunGrave: Left Head

Sam Goody sells it, or probably Suncoast.

Later,

The first series that would come to mind for me (other than Cowboy Bebop) is Hellsing, which MSPilot already mentioned. The intro song, "Logos Naki World," is the most notable jazz piece in the series, although there are a few other pieces in the soundtrack that have a jazz feel.

I seem to recall hearing some jazzy music in X TV, but since the piece I have in mind isn't included in the soundtrack, I may be mistaken about it.

Hellsing
Cowboy Bebop
Big O
Metropolis
Maser of Mosquiton

That's all I can come up with right now.

Don't worry, I was just teasing you earlier. :) Both are complementary and are required to get along in any band setting (especially in a jazz ensemble).

Gungrave is a little known anime that is mostly all jazz.

It's too bad I missed Gungrave during the Anime Unleashed airings. Seeing as you said it's mostly jazz, I will definately have to check this one out as well.

Thanks guys for the input!

I second Tintin; Metropolis rocks and its got an awesome Dixiland, 1930s Jazz Soundtrack to it, and yes Ray Charles has a crack aswell (I got it wrong in the review).

But as far as I know only Bebop has a majority of Jazz in it. Good thread Aeolus Im gonna check out the other series aswell, being a Jazz lover myself.

I've heard that Divergence Eve has techno-jazz in it, but i dont know for sure because i havent seen the series. I want to since i like techno music though.

And also just a correction on Gungrave. It has a lot of jazz and blues. Not just jazz.
And some dark techno'ish music on it.

RahXephon also has quite a bit of Jazz. It has a very interesting soundtrack...The show has quite a musical backdrop.
