.hack//SIGN would be an example of a BAD dub. Everyone's voice sucked. The only one that was remotely any good was Mimiru, because her voice actor is experienced at dubbing anime. Even so, I don't like her voice anyways.

Dub or Sub? For me it depends on the series.

First off, there are several series that have not been lisensed by american companies that I watch fansubbed. There are no dubs for these series. If I am going to watch it at all, I HAVE to watch it subbed. (i.e. Naruto, Getbackers, Saiyuki RELOAD, Hikaru no Go...)

Other series just happen to have really good dubs, and I preferr to watch it instead of the subbs. After all, if I don't have to read, I can concentrate more on the actual pictures. This is especially good for fight scenes. (i.e. Cowboy Bebop, Gensomaden Saiyuki...)

Then there are some dubs that absolutely suck, and I hate to hear the sound of them, either because of a butchered script or bad voice acting (Ceres, Celestial Legend, DBZ, Sailor Moon, Pokemon...)

Lastly, there are the series that I could watch subtitled or dubbed. I perferr the sub most of the time, but when you have little cousins that have trouble reading subtitles... (Trigun, Oh! My Goddess!, Rurouni Kenshin, Saiyuki...)

All in all, it just depends on the circumstance.

Ive seen bad subs and bad dubs, but I prefer the dubs better.....I saw a naruto sub that was completely unintelligable, and I've heard dubs that make every charachter sound like their speaking through a helium balloon, but actually I usually watch with dubbed english and subs running at the same time...ahhh the wonders of DVD, due to the fact that in many cases they are different, and one contains a joke or pur that the other dosnt..its really quite fun

It's not a bad thing at all. I prefer watching subtitles, but that is because when I read the subtitles they go pretty quick and it makes me a faster reader, but when I am tired of reading I will use the dubbed version. Usually if it is on T.V I have no choice, but when I have a DVD I have a choice. I'll usually watch them in subtitles first, then in dubbed version, just to see how much the dubbed version missed on the lines, because sometimes they leave out a lot of words.

My friends prefer dubbed version way over subbed. This reason is because they do not want to keep up with the words and all. Sometimes when I buy a DVD it will come in only subtitles, but that doesn't bother me. I like subbed over dubbed, when you are tired of reading, and you just want to lay back and enjoy the scenevand action, I prefer dubbed. I woud say they are equal when I compare them. I love both of them.

I prefer to watch them dubbed, because then I can pay attention to the art work and what the characters are doing. In subtitles I find I spend so much time reading that I miss alot. Unless it is a horrible dub, I will watch it dubbed. The few DVDs I have I have watched both ways and they are identical.(ex. Ah My Goddess) Its personal preference I guess. The main thing that drew me to anime was the artwork, so I don't want to miss out on that by reading! Whatever helps you enjoy it the best!

I disagree, I enjoyed the .Hack//Sign dub very much, the characters voices always seemed to be consistant with what was going on at the time, they also sounded very natural to me. Now if you REALLY want an example of a bad dub, go with DBZ or Crest of the Stars(bad dub but excellent character development). I also prefer the Inu Yasha dub, everyone's voices for the most part seem to fit perfectly, Inu Yasha's VA is hillarous and always seems to fit his facial expressions.

Oh, and I prefer dubs, mostly because I don't like having to read the subtitles while I can be concentrating on the artwork. Though I will admit some anime is a lot more intellegent subbed.

I have my own little method of anime watching. I have the english track playing anf\d the subtitles turned on. That way I don't miss anything. I figure with the japanese track, they'll just be saying gibberish as far as I'm concerned so if I watch it in Japanese, there'll be no point to the speech, but at least when its in english, you can easily tell whats going on, althought the voice acting sucks, at least its intelligible.

The Japanese version of the Rurouni Kenshin movie was scary in that Kenshin sounded like a girl, Sano sounded like a sumo wrestler, and Yahiko sounded like an adult. With that movie, I like the dub better.

However with some Anime, both the original AND the dubbed voices are crummy...

Me too. Despite the fact that I've seen most anime in both Japanese and English languages (I tend to watch DVDs at least twice, once for each language), I find that I like the English-language versions better.

Hmmm... some things I do really prefer to see in sub, though... One of the stupid reasons why I no longer watch Inuyasha on Cartoon Network - even though I haven't seen any of it subtitled... I decided that the English voices just got on my nerves too much. I bought a little Shippo keychain at Anime Expo this year... a little talking keychain, after seeing IY keychains bought by friends... even judgeing from the little recorded catch-phrases in Japanese they shout... I decided I liked the Japanese IY way better and that the dub just... got on my nerves! I haven't even SEEN it in Japanese.. this is just from the voices from those stupid keychains!

Now THIS is blasphemy! Not watching Inuyasha because it's dubbed in English! Psh! That's no excuse for not watching it! [ /rabid Inuyasha fan]

And, I have fansubbed Azumanga Daioh. I FEAR what dubbers are going to do to it, given all these Japanese and Japanese-to-English (given that the cast is studying English ) jokes... I mean... I don't see how a dub can accurately account for some of the stuff in there. Official subtitles, yes, if translators don't mess it up, but dub.. um... it would be weird.

You haven't read the Azumanga Daioh mangas, have you? It's awful. They inconsistently convert English to Spanish! Yukari-sensei talks to a student about how he's improved in his Spanish skills, and the student replies that it's because he's going to Spain soon. However, elsewhere she is referred to as an English teacher, and one time when Nyamo and Yukari run into a foreigner, Nyamo says, "You know, when you speak in English you actually don't sound like an idiot," or something to that effect.

At least buy the DVDs if you are going to watch the fansubs, get the DVDs that ADV puts out or import from Japan, at least either way help support the anime industry even if you don't watch them, but pirating is not only against the 10 comandments, its against the law.

Dubs are fine, depending on how well they are done. (For example, princess mononoke had horrible dubbing.).

Now if I'm watching some foreign kung-fu movie, I prefer subs, because I'm yet to hear a dub of a live action movie that sounded good.

^Good point. That is why I always (if I have a choice) watch the anime dubbed first, so that I can understand (better) what is going on with the characters and plot and such. Then I go back and watch the subbed version, just for the authenticity. I like hearing the characters as they were meant to be heard: in Japanese. I also like to compare the dubbing to the text from the subtitles for accuracy! Maybe one day ( I HOPE! *crosses fingers*) I'll actually learn Japanese and I won't need the dubbs anymore, hehe...

I really don't mind dubs, unless they're just inexplicably horrible. I usually do watch subs, though, and tend to be more of a purist - not as much as my son - but, close. I also just can't get used to hearing Chiyo (Azumanga Daioh) with any other voice than the Japanese one. She is just so cute sounding when she sings her cooking song.

I'm also a big ADV voice actor fan. They have the best voice actors and actresses around. Bandai's aren't too bad either. I just love Chris Patton (Sasoke on FMP), J. Shannon Weaver (Kenshin Himura) and Crispin Freeman (Alucard) - they are the best voice actors.

Yes! I love Bandai's dubs for the most part! .Hack//Sign, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Big O for example have excellent voice acting, though Crest of the Stars was... yeah Though ADV... it just seems like they recycle their actors a lot, which isn't a bad thing, its just noticeable.
