Hey there, it's good to see a parent getting into anime and trying to understand it for their kids, lol. My folks could care less about the fandom and don't try and understand it at all. However, I really do love it and I've been getting my little sisters into it. They're ten and eleven so I know what it's like to have to be careful about what you let them see. I get them into some of the shows on Cartoon Network on [adultswim] here in the States and they are really enjoying them. I haven't gotten them into Samurai Champloo (by the people that did Cowboy Bebop) or Paranoia Agent because those can be very questionable if you look at them from a Christian and appropriate-for-children perspective (despite how much I love both of them). But most of the [adultswim] series are good and there are tons of other good series ou there too. I'll list a few...
- Fullmetal Alchemist is a fun show and is one on adultswim that I've gotten my sisters into. I absolutely adore it and so do they. There is a little bit of cursing but considering how the main character is fiteen/sixteen, there isn't all that much. There is also a bit of graphic violence which isn't all that graphic, especially if you watch CSI (lol, that show creeps me out sometimes with how graphic it is... >>;...) and Cowboy Bebop. It's pretty fast paced, it's got a lot of character interaction and character growth... it's a really easy series to get into. It's currently the most popular series in the US, I think, even beating InuYasha in the ratings here and there.
- Galaxy Railways is a series that I just picked up that I'm very much enjoying. I initially got it because I know the guy who directed part of the series, but after watching the first episode, I just fell in love. It's a really old school kind of anime. I know a lot of people will remember Galaxy Express 999 and many will agree that it was their first anime (that's another good one you should check out too). But this series is about a young man who is following in his father and brother's footsteps to work for the Space Defense Force and protect the galactic railways. It's really a good series.
- Generator Gawl is an over all fun anime. It's only thirteen episodes long and you can pick it up for pretty cheap in a box set from ADV Films. One of my favorite actors is in it and I had my friend let me borrow it. Absolutely had a blast watching it. Gawl is such a dork and the whole interactions between him and his friends and everything are great.
- Trigun is one of those good versus evil stories that everyone should see. It's about a guy with a huge bounty on his head because trouble always seems to find him. He's rumored to be an expert and deadly gunman, but hardly ever fires a shot and never takes a life. It's a very good serires, very little graphic nature, and you'd enjoy it as well.
Other anime to check out: Kodocha, Planetes, Naruto (coming soon), Full Metal Panic and Fullmetal Panic FUMOFFU, DNAngel, Fuits Basket, InuYasha (though I hate it XD), Kenshin, Spiral, Orphen, Wolf's Rain (a little graphic but it's probably okay if you watch Cowboy Bebop), Voice of a Distant Star (movie), Outlaw Star, s-CRY-ed (even though, again, it's not a favorite of mine), Case Closed.... etc, lol.
Hope this thread has helped you guys find a series that you can both enjoy. ^_^
