Emotional Attachment...

Postby Aeolus21 » Mon Jul 25, 2005 10:44 am

Partially inspired by the "Anime characters that impacted you" thread, why do you think that some people (including myself) get emotionally attached to anime characters? Is it somehow crazy to crush over characters or use some of their endearing qualities as motivation in our lives?

I don't know if it's necessarily a healthy thing or not since we're talking about fictional characters, but I do feel that since they were molded by human beings (the writers), a lot of what we see in the characters reflect people in general. At least that's how I see it.

It is rather strange... I don't have a CRUSH on an anime character... if I say I do it is more of a joke than anything...

However... Since they are SUPPOSED to be humans (humans have tiny mouths and Big eyes? O.o ) maybe we can just relate to them..

I think it's a character's story that makes them endearing to us. Like people, a character's past, present and personality can draw me to them. Besides...that's how you know a character is well-defined...when you form something other than an apathetic interest toward them n_n

I get VERY emotionally attached to characters I can relate to. The last few episodes of tactics had me bawling because Kantaro handles disappointment and defeat in much the same way I do...and it was just so terrible to see the pained expression on his face. T_T

The episode of Saiyuki, "Ame" was also a tear-jerker for me because I love love love love Son Goku. o.o;

*shakes her head, smiling* I wish to God I knew. It's kind of difficult. I want you guys to know that I don't fake attachment to Nicholas in the least. I really do love him, or think I do. So it hurts to see a lot of Trigun yaoi all over the internet. I just...I dunno. ^^;;
On another note, I am constantly watching anime and going, "...he needs a hug..." XDD

There's probably a deeper need in your soul that this character (or your desiring him or her) gives the appearance of meeting.

Search your heart and ask God to show you what that need is.

Aw, I get really emotional over those emotion-heavy shows like Giant Robo and Now and Then, Here and There.

Poor Shu ToT

But as for being attracted to characters, no, never... I just have sympathy for them.

If I knew the answer to this, I would be very happy. If I could control my attachment to characters, I would be even happier. Because this would mean I'd have some control over my feelings in real life too. Yay!

That sounds like good advice.

I get into the shows when I watch them. And they might leave me thinking "wow that was sad" or "that was great" or trying to figure out the philosophy of the shows whether it's fubar or not. But I can't say I've ever been really attached as you would call it to a particular character. I mean I have sympathy for them like Impact said but that's about as far as it goes for me.

Ahh, I find myself attached to certain characters. Exceptionally cute characters, characters I identify with, characters whose stories or plights I get wrapped up in. I think as long as they don't take the place of attachments to real people it's not a problem. But go as the Lord personally convicts you. I don't think it's "weird", though. I've gotten attached to characters in running book series and been sad to see them go too.

Yeah ... I hate the end of series for that reason. It's not really just with anime with me, though, it's with any fictional character that I like or relate to. I bawled like a little kid at the end of Full Moon wo Sagashite (mostly because it was the end) but I also get really wrapped up in book characters or (really, really good) TV shows like Lost.

Yep, i get attached to characters quite alot and think about what id do in their place if they are in a dillemma or something. I'm sad when they die or are in pain. Why? I cant say and i kinda like the mystery so i dont mind not knowing.

I don't think I really get that emotionally attached to anime characters - I mean, they're just animated characters. ^__^;;;

However, I remember getting pretty bothered when I thought Mikoto was dead in Mai-Hime. She was like one of my favorite characters.

Oh yes, I get super attached to characters in books. I truly get upset if they kill off a favorite character. >.<

YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

Hi!

Well, I think anime characters have more appeal than real ones when it comes to relationships. I know that I sometimes prefer to look at gorgeous anime boys than real ones! :>

In the past I used to have a real thing about Tieh from Weathering Continent. I think it was because he was so gentle and sweet all the way through the film and he was drawn in that typical "Arslan Senki" style with gorgeous eyes and hair.
My fave right now is Toboe (Wolf's Rain), he's so kind and sweet. When he got shot all of the characters soon followed, so the death wasn't so bad...plus he came back to life right at the end. (ARRGH! More story!) But I also really love Fr. Anderson in Hellsing, so I dunno what's wrong with my tastes...he's like, totally the opposite of Toboe.
Peace be with you...look not on our sins but on the faith of Your church.

May I just drop in to remind you about spoiler tags, Uriel. I would be horribly disappointed if I hadn't seen Wolf's Rain and saw your post.

There has been one exceptional moment where I was emotionally affected by what happened to an anime/manga character.
I was pretty devastated when I learnt that Kaoru Kamiya died, brutally killed by Enishi Yukishiro. I refuse to tell you what happens in the end.
I also generally feel more somber after reading some volumes of Blade of Immortal.

No matter how many times I watch Silent Mobius I always get an emotional knot
in my stomach when it gets down to the last 4 or 6 eps. and I know Katsumi's
temporarily going over to the Dark Side.Even though I know it's gonna end up
with her getting redeemed,I still can't watch those eps.without getting all emotional.

It's probably wishing that some of these characters actually exist. :)

Although somehow it seems like I can connect or relate to a few anime\fictional characters to real people. Other than that, being introverted means that I can easilly dwelve myself into a fantasy world, so I guess it might be a need to escape being lonesome or bored... it's just a hunch, though.
