Quetions about Chobits

Postby heero yuy 95 » Fri Jul 22, 2005 9:39 pm

Hey everbody. As you all know I am a hard-core giant robot geek, but sometimes I like to make exceptions. I have recently been reading stuff on the internet about Chobits and it sounds like a great series. Is it an emotional love story? 'Cuz that's just what I'm in the mood for! :thumb:
Yeah I've been in the mood for a good love story and this series looks like it might just what I'm looking for. even better, my local Gamestop has a bunch of dvds for half-priced! They might even have the whole series! But I do have some questions. I've heard that this anime has a lot of fanservice, now, if it's fan-service like, upskirt shots and skimpy outfits, I can handle it.
What I'm concerned about is, does it have any nudity? If it's just barby-doll magical girl undetailed stuff once or twice, i can handle that, but I mean, does it ever show someone breasts or anything like that, because I'd have to turn it down. any comments on this series would be well-appreciated. Thanks in advance! :thumb:

PS- do they take God's name in vain? That is another thing I am looking out for.

There is a great deal of fanservice in the series. Add to this the main characters fixation on internet porn and the rather sensitive way that a cobit is switched on and you could end up with some rather embarassing moments if in mixed company. Some may have problems with the issue of humans falling in love with the Persocoms. We probably really do need a review of this one here. Until then here is one from Them Anime you might want to look over:

I hate the fact that this series has so much fanservice.. the story would be great with out it...

*sigh* but yah.. there are a lot of scenes in which wouldn't be the greatest.. for someone who is trying to stay away from such things, (at least in the manga)

soo my advice to you... is if you really hate that stuff...don't look into this series..CLAMP is known for this kind of shtuffs.. and I ams rue that God's name is taken in vain..

I concur with the previous posts, though in my opinion the fanservice is sorta up in the air at some parts. Much of what would be considered fanservice on the part of Chi (the main persocom character) I really didn't look at it that way due to her innocence childlike naivety; Hideki's responses to these situations is pretty much what made it "fanservice", though how he reacts in such scenarios is usually quite funny :-) Just how I saw it though! A wonderful story, and beautifully drawn. I'd say at least check out the first disc and then make a judgment as to whether or not you want to continue!

Thanks, guys. Actually, I got to look at a few pages on the internet, and it just had too much racy humor for my tastes. And also, considering I used to have a hentai addiction(don't look at it anymore), I'm sure loads of fanservice wouldn't exactly help keep me away from it. So unfortunately, I will have to turn this one down. It's a shame, too because it sounded good. Oh well. Hey, since i've already started this thread, can you guys reccommend any fairly clean romance anime? I'm open to any suggestions and my standards are as follows in my post above.

YESH!

DnANGEL! (Is a cute romance series!! )

and Fruits Basket (it isn't nessarilly romantic per say..but you so want the main girl character to wind up with one of the two main guy characters...) I think it is more about relationships than anything.. but.. it isn't over yet..so..who knows?

If you want a clamp manga without fan service with a great love story I recommend Tsubasa Resivoir Chronicles. Chobits has quite a bit of nudity and the story was good but it could have been better without the guy having piles of porn, skimpy clothing on persecoms, and several other things. I did like the themes. And the story was actualy way better then a similar stoy called Absolute Boyfriend with is a girl with a male robot. Which was filth. I don't recomend Chobits for you.

Try Fruit Baskets. Its sweet.

Escaflowne is about as romantic as Fruits Basket is--has hints of it, but not the main point. Still, it's a fantastic series. Hmm...clean romances....I can't think of anything that hasn't been mentioned that would fit the bill (or that I've personally seen and not just read). You could check our review database though; we categorize by genre. ^^

Yes, as kazekami said, for CLAMP's beautiful artwork (better than their art in Chobits in my opinion) and a romantic story with lack of fanservice (as far as I've seen), it's tough to beat Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle.

And as Ash pointed out (all I'm doing is seconding people's opinions here), the Vision of Escaflowne has it all: romance, fantasy, mecha (there you go!), and lack of fanservice.

Chobits is not a bad series, but (again just in my opinion) there are better CLAMP series out there and better series in general, especially for someone who wants to steer clear of fanservice.

Hmmm... I'll probably stay away from the series because of all the tarot card stuff(yeah, I know I'm picky) but I would like to try out the movie! There is a copy of it at my local Gamestop, and I just might get it. Is the movie a love story as much as the series, and do they take God's name in vain in the movie? If the answers are yes and no, then I just might buy it! A love story with cool mecha! Can't beat that!

Hopefully someone who has seen the Escaflowne movie will get on here. Or maybe we have a review of it here on CAA. Personally, I have not seen it, so take my opinion with a big grain of salt (or several grains). But from what I've seen and heard of the Escaflowne movie, it falls short of the series. I do not intend to see the movie, though the series is one of my two favorite anime series ever. I'd definitely rent it before buying it if possible, if you do plan to try it out. Again, just my opinion.

I saw the first hour of the Escaflowne movie, and I was thoroughly disappointed. The art was great, but it was just....beyond odd. None of the characters matched up to how they were presented in the original series; it was beyond bloody and dabbled into weird magic sort of things. I just didn't like it. Plus, Hitomi was like, borderline suicidal.

I'll probably stay away from the series because of all the tarot card stuff

Actually, they gave a very good message about this. Hitomi learned the tarot cards were a major, dangerous thing and she was hurting people by using them. She swears them off. They were not treated lightly at all.

Yeah, as Ashley said. Escaflowne the movie had great art, but it did feel a bit too rush. I still like the movie, but the series is alot better.

If you get a chance, watch the movie when it comes to CN later this year.

How vcould I forget Esca. It's one of my favorites. And as Ashely said Hitomi learns that they are bad. The story is awsome. And the music is beautiful. But its up to everyone to decide what they deem appropriate.

I agree to all that. I watched the whole movie. It's hardly like the girl (the anime) version of Escaflowne. The movie is like a mish-mash of the manga, anime, and new ideas. It's unfulfilling if you saw the anime. (As everybody says. ^^; )

Hitomi does learn that being suicidal isn't the right thing to do. I kinda felt there was a connection with Hitomi and the country (?) of Gaia.

Yo, Voices of a Distant Star be some mad happs.

That's the romance if I ever saw one that was good. And I haven't. Except that one. And it's like 30 minutes. Most extreme if you ask, but you don't! : D

Oh another good Romance is "Beyond the Clouds: The Place Promised in our youth". That is an absolutely beautiful film. It may be a bit slow for some. But it is a very beautiful love story.

Ughhh... I thought that anime sucked to no end. I like love stories with happy ending, not ones about hopeless, depressing relationships that will never work. And it didn't have enough mecha action. So i thought it was neither a good romance anime or mecha anime. No offense to those of you who like it, just my opinion.

sorry if I seemed a little too critical, thanks for the suggestion, but Voices of a Distant Star was just not my cup of tea.

That's the same film that was directed by the director of Voices of a Distant Star? You talk like it's already out.

I'm a bit late but as for Chobits...I have yet to watch the anime but I have started collecting the manga and I am enjoying it thouroughlly. But for the topic of fanservice surrounding Chobits, my best advice is to what degree of fan service can you handle as Christian before you start to stumble. Other then that, Chobits is a fun and romantic story.

Well, in Mikako's "vision" she is told that she'll se Noboru again, and the thought that they share with one another is "I am here" (versus "I love you, which would've been kinda cliche'...). This affirms their love for one another and also affirms that they will still remain connected because of it in some way; one will always feel the other's presence so they can go on with life until the time comes that they're together again. Just my two cents on the show :-)
