The Battle: Manga vs Anime

Postby Mr. SmartyPants » Wed Jul 20, 2005 6:45 pm

DUN DUN DUUUUN! Tis a battle! Yes! Both are great, but there can only be one true preference in your books!

Do you perfer Manga? The awesome page to page action! And in many cases, much better than the anime predecessor, and includes more detail and plot (some exceptions, like Naruto) And awesome book format! Thus portable.

Or Do you perfer Anime? Love to see the characters move? Speak (voice actors!) And soundtracks?

I like manga for the reasons Mr. SP mentioned. :)

I love anime, but manga is good also. They are both different mediums. Some mangas are great, while others are crap. Same thing goes for anime. But it relys on a case by case review. I enjoy manga are in book form, something you can touch, are mobile and you can appreciate the art/story at your own speed. I enjoy the animation of anime, the atmosphere, voice acting, art and all that stuff. Also anime is far easier to come and has wider variety and is cheaper here for the amount of entertainment you get.
Manga averages about $25-$30 Australian for say a 200 page one, while you can buy a anime dvd with three or four episodes (75 or 100 mins) for about $30 Australian, sometimes cheaper.

Ouch! That's rather expensive for a manga! In the US, the prices are falling to about $10 USD (which XE.com says is about $13.18 AUS dollars) per 200 page volume

Yeah, that's the reason I don't have all that much manga. Also I don't have much anime (two boxsets - Noir and Last Exile and half a dozen anime movies) but I'll get more in the future. It would almost be cheaper to buy manga in bulk from Amazon.com or something and have it shipped over! (lol) Actually that's not a bad idea!

manga I guess, but anime is equally as enjoyable. XD The clincher for me is that manga is cheaper.

Yeah manga is way cheaper here. Plus most of the stuff I have is in Japanese which is also cheaper. i only buy the ones I like too. Plus my mom is more likely to buy me manga for $5-10 then an anime DVD for $20-35. Plus I like to read. And plus I like to read. Also i can take it with me and read it on the bus. also anime based off manga usually aren't as good as the original. And the art for some is also not as good as the origninal. there are exception.

For me it's just like the whole book vs. movie debate. Honestly, it just depends. Sometimes the manga is better, sometimes the anime is better. Sometimes they're pretty much the same. That's my thoughts on the "debate" anyways....

Manga do not require an interface to be used, like anime DVDs do. That alone tips the scales in manga's favor for me. They don't require electricity or batteries, either.

Both are good. With anime you dont have to worry about things getting confusing because there's too many detailed pictures on a single page and colour emphasises things too decreasing any confusion you might have further. Also you can choose to watch anime dubbed or subbed and that isnt even an option with manga. You're always stuck with the englash version if you dont know how to read japanese. The other thing anime has that manga doesnt is well timed music. Mr. SP outlined the good things about manga. They're different mediams and each is good in its own way. :)

*peaks head in carefully*

*cough* Anime. *cough*

I only have a few mangas and they're okay. Personally, I like to see what's happening in motion. Maybe I just have no imagination (though there are pictures...). I also like to just sit back, relax and just watch (AKA: being lazy)

Though, with the prices of anime dvds, I may just have to switch to manga.

I love the animation of anime, however I also love manga. I think both mediums have there advantages and disadvantages as fare as what can be brought to the reader/viewer. I tend to prefer manga for purchase as it is much cheaper however I rent a lot of anime. I however am gonna have to vote manga because I do fell that manga does tend to have better stories, plots, and characters, though anime is exellent as well.

I like manga becuase the author can really expand on the story and characters. Manga is what the author really intended the story to be. And Manga is cheaper. I still love anime and all but my wallet is always empty.

Ouch. This is a tough one. There are certain manga I really, really like, better than most anime. Plus, nothing beats taking manga over to the park or onto my deck to read, which doesn't work for me with anime.

However, in general I would have to say I prefer anime. The voices, the music, the bright colors, the action. I'm into dynamic things, things that keep me visually stimulated and interested (closet ADHD), so video games and anime are great. I get into anime much more easily than manga for this reason. Plus, I like to enjoy my hobbies while I eat (yes, while I eat), which is easier to do with anime than manga.

Costwise, I find I'll buy a couple volumes of anime rather than several volumes of manga. Plus, I have a great rental place near here so I'm able to feed my anime habit regularly.

So I love both, but if I had to choose it would be anime.

What if the anime came first and the manga came after that?

Sorry, I won't get into this debate. Each medium has its own pluses and minuses, and one isn't necessarily "better" than the other.

For that matter, I'm surprised most people haven't voted for anime for the sole reason that the sexual content, nudity, and violence are toned down as compared to the manga.

Oh well, matters not to me. I like what I like, and that's all that matters. ^^

I prefer manga. The manga that were later adapted into anime generally have superior plots, less unnecessary fluff, and better-sounding dialogue. English manga seems to be more faithful to its original Japanese counterpart than anime dubs and even some subs are. But I think the main reason I prefer manga is that its cheaper and it is a healthier and more mentally stimulating way to spend time, in my opinion. The only advantages that anime has for me is more emotional impact through music and voices as well as anime containing less sexual content.

Who cares? They both have good stuff.

Manga: I can copy the art better. X3

Anime: I can actually follow the action sequences. >.<

Manga!

Postby Madeline » Fri Jul 22, 2005 9:24 am

I prefer manga because the illustrations are generally prettier than that of anime. The small books are also cheap and portable.

I like to spend a long time pondering over each scene and reading the author's notes. If my short attention span runs out, it's also fun to trace and color the pictures! :jump:

I believe a "Both" option would make the poll itself somewhat pointless.

For me it is a close call, because each series varies greatly depending upon how it was created. Sometimes either can be better in terms of plot and characterization. So, hence, the choice I made shouldn't be taken as a rule, merely a final choice.

Ultimately, I'll say manga, for a reason that I don't believe I have mentioned yet: it is faster. Even an anime with quick dialogue is far slower than reading the same scene. In the same way, a dramatic pause in manga is merely that: a dramatic pause. I have to sit through it in anime.

Manga cuz it's cheaper and I can draw from it easier

Anime cuz of voices and music
