Author’s Notes: I have tried to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. This review is for the Japanese subbed version of Generator Gawl. Please note that some things may be different in the dub than in the sub.

Explanations and details


Violence: Every episodes involves a battle with a Generator, and some of the Generators (including Gawl) shed red blood when damaged. Generators are defeated by ripping the core out of their body. The violence is fairly mild for most of the show, however, it should be noted that the episode before the last is pretty bloody, which involves a fight scene with a character getting beaten to a pulp. There is a scene in the same episode where a Generator’s core is ripped out of his body while he is in human form. (It’s pretty bloody) There is one implied suicide. Overall, the violence is no worse than a PG-13 movie.

Objectional Language: There isn’t a whole lot. The only words I recall are a few uses of h*** and d***. Nothing else over that.

Nudity: In one episode, the group are at a public bathhouse. A few men are shown naked from behind. In another episode, a girl is shown naked in a tube. (From the side, nothing is detailed.)

Sexual Situations: When Gawl and Masami first meet, she initially belives he’s a pervert. (He’s not) Masami makes a comment to Natsume about her cup size. Ryuko Saito comes off as a bit seductive at times. At one point she gropes Gawl and comments on his ‘well built body’. The dub has changed dialogue around to make Ryo and Koji seem to be gay. (More on this later)

Religious Stuff: Considering this show is based somewhat around science, the topic of evolution does pop up a few times. It’s very mild though.

Plot: In the year 2007, Professor Takuma Nekasa will discover the include cells, allowing super soldiers called Generators (combinations of flesh and metal) to be created by awakening genes long dormant in humans. The discovery of the include cells will ultimately bring about World War III, after which humanity will almost be completely be wiped out. Humanity will be restored by an empire known as Kubere. But as three young scientists in the future will discover, it was all a conspiracy… The three young scientists: Gawl, Koji, and Ryo have come from the future into the past to prevent the discovery of the include cells, and change the future. Kubere is trying to stop them at all costs, sending Generators disguised as humans into the past to kill them. In order to defeat them, Gawl must become a Generator and fight on their terms. The discovery of the include cells is approaching. They only have three months…

Additional Comments: At first I wasn’t very impressed with this anime. I even wondered if perhaps I made an unwise buy, as the first six episodes didn’t impress me a whole lot. But the real meat of the show isn’t in the first half of the show, it’s in the second half. The first half is mainly for character introductions and character development. The second half is much more interesting, as it covers the reasons for Gawl, Koji, and Ryo wanting to change history, and the real plot truly begins to unfold. The final three episodes are filled with numerous plot twists, and there’s a pretty dramatic scene. It’s even more interesting on the second viewing, as you are able to understand more of what’s going on that you may not have understood on the first viewing. It’s an under appreciated anime which deserves a look by any casual anime fan.

Music: I liked the music in this anime. It sets the mood nicely, and the opening theme is among my favorite anime openings. The closing theme, on the other hand, I really dislike, as it just doesn’t seem to really fit with the show. The show really could have done without it in my opinion.

Sub/Dub: The dubbed version is one of the few dubs I have ever watched, and I have to say, it’s one of the best dubs I’ve ever heard. The English voices are very close to the original Japanese voices. And even though I typically watch the sub, I personally prefer Natsume’s English voice over her Japanese one. One thing I really dislike about the dub: dialogue has been altered to make it seem that Ryo and Koji are gay. On a rewatch of the sub, I did not notice any indication in the dialogue proving that the above was correct. I personally as a Christian despise yaoi, and I dislike the fact that the dub writers tried to slip this in.
