Animes you are avoiding watching for stupid reasons

Postby Haibane Shadsie » Tue Nov 11, 2003 8:35 pm

NOT for good reasons, like they are hentai or you've heard they are anti-Christian and/or really disturbing... just anime you haven't watched and/or are avoiding for dumb reasons. I didn't read the whole thread, as I have very little paitience... but I was reading the bad anime thread, and reading Bobtheduck's comments on NGE, and looking at the "Grave of the Fireflies" thing in his sig, and it gave me the idea for this thread in some strange way...

Anime I'm avoiding for dumb reasons:

"Grave of the Fireflies". I DO want to see this movie eventually. I've heard of how much of a masterpiece it is. I've also heard of how sad it is. I know it real history (an autobiography, in fact, right?). Anyway...I do want to see it, but it is like how I held off watching "Schindler's List" for years and years... I was afraid of how I would react to it. I eventually watched "Schindler's List" when it appeared on PBS one year, unedited, no commericals, with one intermission. I watched the movie through, had trouble sleeping, and... was depressed for three straight days. Don't get me wrong... the movie was an absolute masterpiece, but it made me feel so sad... I am holding off seeing "Grave of the Fireflies" for fear of it having the same effect on me as "Schindler's List" did.

Rouroni Kenshin - on Cartoon Network. Actually, I have begun watching it on Saturdays. I was avoiding it because I wanted to wait until I was able to afford tapes/DVDs... I was afraid of Cartoon Network butchering it beyond belief... wanted to wait until I could see the "real thing"... but, I've begun watching on CN now...

Urusei Yatsura - the first OVA... I bought a tape when I was at Anime Expo. I've yet to open it just because I've been too lazy to sit down and watch it. I plan to, because I bought it for purposes of watching, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Saiyuki. Everyone I know loves it, but I'm just not into those four guys and they seem so irritating in the few parts I've actually walked in and watched. Somebody should shoot Sanzo with his own gun and lower Goku's squawking voice. My kids love the show, however. :stressed:

I put off watching "Grave of the Fireflies" for the very reason you stated, Shadsie. I knew it would be depressing and it was. I still haven't gotten the nerve to watch "Schindler's List." And, I probably never will.

I don't want to watch Getbackers because I think the name is really dumb. That is definitely a stupid reason.

[size=84][color=seagreen]YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

well, sometimes I don't watch a series when a friend keeps 'promoting' to an extreme point that I get fed up and refuse to watch it even if it may be good.

Friend: It's good, really, it's very cooolll!!
MichiruT: Nope...no time, later...
Friend: Awwww, come on! You don't know what you're missing!
Michiru: :stressed:

Kinda stupid eh? Pride.....

PS: Not posting specific names or titles, ain't getting in trouble for this

Inuyasha, because I haven't seen all the episodes and I don't want to be completely lost LOL, I hate watching a series midway and not knowing what's going on.

Kenshin, because of the edits. I've seen the edit list, and the editing is just *stupid.* I mean, some things we definitely could do without, but so many of the edits are so inconsistent and pointless (i.e. the word "death" was replaced with "hurt" in one episode but not another)

There are more but those are my two main series that I really want to watch sometime-oh, and I definitely want to see Castle in the Sky. I have the DVD, but was too busy for a while. . .then my DVD-RW drive started acting up. . .GRR. :comp:

I used to avoid Pokemon on purpose the first time it was on because I wanted to show everyone that I was a mature individual. Then I got into the game and I realised the anime wasn't too bad. Then I grew up and avoided Pokemon cause I really was mature =P

O_O I'm shocked... both of those are my favorite series...

About Saiyuki, were they watching the dub or sub? Cause I liked the dub, Goku's voice wasn't too high. Sanzo's my favorite character... *sweatdrop* You just need to sit down and watch a couple episodes. Do not be decieved by the first episode, it is an awesome series (the first episode is mediocre in comparison to the rest of it).

You don't know what your missing with Getbackers. I thought the title was stupid too, but the characters are incredibly awesome. There was a large thread recently about it.

For the longest time, I avoided Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as Saiyuki, Getbackers, Ecaflowne, Chobits, Noir, Rahxephon(sp?), Cowboy Bebop, X/1999, Rurouni Kenshin, and Inu Yasha. *sweatdrop* I don't know why I was avoiding them... they are so much fun...

Now, I am avoiding Witch Hunter Robin, FLCL, Excel Saga, Saber Marionette J... (can't remember them all)

LOL, I avoided Cowboy Bebop for the *longest* time because, first, it was too popular and something that popular just *couldn't* be good and was just a bunch of people pretending it was good to look "hip" (think Eva and all the people who love it because it makes them "true anime fans," LOL), Then, because I'd always catch it mid-series when I was interested.

So, I finally watched it from the first episode on its next to last replay-and loved it. :) LOL

The terrifying moldy bread incident! In elementary school, Yomi's leftover bread started rotting inside her desk! you can't imagine what happened! Not only that, but the mold had a will of its own, it was terrible! Barricading ourselves in the science prep room, we used spirit lamps and engaged in combat! Then I realized it!! If we only had the bottle of mildew remover from the bathroom, we could destroy them!!

Um... I watched "Reign" because I liked the art style... I saw commericals for it and thought "Whoa, neat! It looks almost like El Greco!" (For those who don't know art history, a Spanish painter back somwhere in Renaisscance times. He did a lot of religious devotion paintings with these pale figures with elongated limbs.)

I watched it and... it sucks. I mean... it has some battle/action sequences, but overall, it's pretty boring. The dialogue in it is maddingly repetative. "Alexander shall destory the world!" "He is the one prophecied to destroy the world." Gah!

wow... to each their own... I couldn't stand reign's art... It's about the worst anime art I've ever seen, in my opinion... I also don't feel like seeing a horde of half-naked, ugly men... I tried watching two episodes, but I couldn't handle the art...

Ditto. Pants anyone?

I have next to no interest in Trigun anymore for the simple reason that it's too popular. Everyone talks about it, everyone writes and draws about it, there's a mind boggling amount of Trigun avatars, and well ... the series has just be beat to death in my eyes. I prefer titles that have small fan bases. I don't like the term but ... I like "cult hits."

But, that's just me. I'm like that in most aspects of my life, be it entertainment or fashion. If something I like becomes too popular, I'll probably drop it and move on to something else. There are a few exceptions for whatever reasons: LotR (fan since grade school), Zelda games (fan since I can remember). Perhaps there is a difference as to when I got hooked on a series ... Like, I'm fine with it if I was a fan before it became popular, but if it's already popular, I'll move on ...

Ok, enough with the typed musings. Back to animes I won't watch for stupid reasons.

I'm not at all drawn to Ghibli films for the sake that they are Ghibli films. I'll watch them, but I don't care at all for the art style. Yet, the animation never fails to impress me, so that says some good stuff about them right there.

I'll probably never watch Initial D, because the thought of an anime that is 95% about cars makes me yawn. And the art style also bugs me.

Ok, I'll stop before I turn this into an introspective rant.

Not sure. But I saw the first 2 episodes and realised I wasn't interested. Just couldn't get into the show I think. Then again, I couldn't get into MKR either, and I thought they were pretty similar.

I thought that too. Then, one night, I was at the store with no other manga to read, and decided, "What the heck," and started reading.

Still not that great, but more interesting than I imagined it would be.

Anime I am avoiding for dumb reasons: Gundam (all of it) and Dragon Ball (similarly). Mostly, I'm not watching as a protest of their respective popularity.

Grave of the fireflies, by the way (in reference to shadesies original message) is kinda an autobiography, but some of the events were symbolic (like the opening) at least that's the definition I read... Obviously, if you've seen it, it couldn't be a completely factual autobiography, but I'm not sure how much was true... I do know there is a LOT of symbolism in th movie, particularly everything in orange... Also, Setsuko was 4 in 1945... She was born about when Japan invaded Pearl Harbor... They'd been at war before that, but they felt no real threat from China and any other country that were at war with... It was only the US that really brought their downfall. So setsuko being born at that time was significant... I love that movie so much, but it is the sadest thing I've ever seen...

None in particular at this moment am I avoiding . . . but I avoided some because I was in a frenzy of too many aimes that I wanted at one time and wasn't really able to have time for them all. Now I just try to see bits of each then decide . . . Its soooo hard though! I like most all of the ones I get to see!

Well, DBZ I avoid because I actually have seen a few episodes of it... blech! It just fails to interest me... nothing but powering up, fighting, powering up, fighting... I do enjoy the little parodies of it I see in American cartoons I watch, though - Invader ZIM, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy,.. Johnny Bravo... all of these had some fun DBZ/general anime parodies in them. (The Johnny Bravo episode I'm thinking of featured something like a cross of Pokemon and DBZ... "Clam League 2000!" or something... "Buy our merchandise!" ) But, DBZ itself... no thanks... but my reason for not watching it is pretty good, I think, not a stupid reason - I've seen a little and found it not to my taste.

As for "Grave of the Fireflies"... yeah, I'm avoiding it for the dumb reason that I'm afraid of how depressed it will make me. It's been acclaimed so much, I'm sure it's one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema ever made... yet, I think I should wait until I'm in a happier life state or something to watch it. Currently, I must take a mild anti-depressant every day in order to... function well. I just remember my reaction to "Schindler's List", how sad it made me... I was mopey for three days... and after that, after 9/11/01... I remember after the initial shock of what happened - having survivor's guilt and cutting myself. I'm just afraid of anything that will make me incredibly sad right now in my life, with the way I am.

Ah... It's too bad the one guy didn't like MKR... It's my fave, which I've probably mentioned a couple times before...

Anyway, my sister wanted me to mention that she is avoiding Peach Girl and Boys Over Flowers because they're about ditzy-teenage-girls-chasing-after-boys-dealing-with-inferiority-complexes-and-best-friend-betrayals-all-set-in-a-disturbingly-normal-japanese-schoolgirl-setting. That's all. :bang:

I really really want to watch "Full Metal Alchemist", but 5 minutes into Ep 3 I started bawling so I'm afraid to continue. As a result, I'm behind the growing fan base by like 6 eps when I should be up to speed....*sigh*

1.Escaflowne-one of my friends really likes this, but I avoided it, because it was part of Fox's Saturday morning line-up.

2.Robotech-I have some of the episodes on dvd, but I don't watch them, because I don't have them all.

3.SD Gundam-too goofy.

Gundam 0079, 8th MS Team, and the original Mobile Suit Gundam-Although I really enjoy Gundam Wing and G Gundam, I have no desire to see these. Go figure.

Grave of the Fireflies-I own it, but I haven't watched it.

Rouroni Kenshin - on Cartoon Network. Actually, I have begun watching it on Saturdays.

Are they showing it on Saturday? What time? It never should have been taken off of Toonami (same with Yu Yu Hakusho), so I would really like to see more of it without buying the dvds.
