"Venus Wars" anime

Postby Alice » Sat Jun 18, 2005 11:24 am

This anime from 1989 is 104 minutes long, and science fiction, set, not surprisingly, on Venus.

It's about punk kids on one-wheeled motorcycles, a perky reporter, and a war they all get caught up in.

The hero, (named "Hiro")ends up fighting and also getting very disillusioned with his own government as well as the enemies.

It is an interesting movie, and it seems to leave room for a sequel (although it does tie things up pretty well).

Amazon.com says it's "Rated 13 and older: violence, profanity, alcohol use, risqué humor."

There were content issues. If anyone's interested, I'll post more about them later.

It was pretty good. Anyone see it?

Here's the link to the one I saw:

Edit: Here's the DVD link. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... ance&s=dvd

Also, I forgot to mention that the villain, "Donner," looks a lot like Char without a mask. (I think so anyway, but I couldn't find any pictures of him online to prove it.)

Yoshikazu Yasuhiko was the director. I believe he had something to do with Gundam so it makes sense. (But this doesn't really seem like Gundam.)

PG-13 is probably an appropriate rating for it. (According to my brother.)

I really don't feel like reciting all the scenes that could be offensive, so I'm not going to do so unless someone needs/wants to know.

I remember seeing it. Kind of mediocre, though not bad.

Has all the cliches

I didn't think it was terribly cliched.

Although the one scene did make me yell at the screen, "You idiots! Don't do that!"
When that dude challenged Hiro to the bike/gun fight.

I really, really liked the scene where the reporter confronted Donner. Too bad, eh?
That reporter chick almost tops Mihoshi from Tenchi Muyo in stupidity. Yeah, I saw it on Sci-fi channel years ago. Thought it was pretty good.
My fave part is when Hero's girlfriend looks at all the devastation that was once a shopping mall and just rants off for a few minutes.

Considering the time frame this released which was during the big 80's early 90's Bloody Anime period. It wasn't as bloody violent as many other animes that were produced and released during this time. This one also had a decent story to back it up I felt. Now granted the whole dictator thing is VERY cliched I grant that, however it was done with a few twists that I don't usually see in it.

I also loved the Vehicles in it, atleast the unibikes. Slightly original use for the idea of a unicycle. Not seen anything quite like that since.

Also as a side note, there was a NES game based on the anime. It's a strategy game with a top gun(game) twist to it for those interested
